Sonar Eclipse

(Published on 4. January 2025, 04:53 by marty_sears)

It was a whole heap of fun making this collab with the brilliant ChinStrap for the Fog of War prompt in Scojo's Setting Saturdays.

    Rules:

Fill the grid with the digits 0-8 so that digits don't repeat in any row, column or 3x3 box.

This section of ocean contains black ships and white ships. Visibility is low, but entering correct digits might clear fog somewhere in the grid. No guessing is necessary.

    SHIPS:

  • A black ship lies on every orthogonal edge between two cells with a 1:2 ratio.
  • A white ship lies on every orthogonal edge between two cells with consecutive digits.
  • (Note: it is possible for two different coloured ships to lie on the same orthogonal edge.) A few ships are shown (beneath the fog), but most aren't, and must be located by using sonar.

    SONAR:

  • A sonar cell is a circle whose 'search radius' includes itself and all neighbouring cells (orthogonally and diagonally.) The digit in a sonar cell indicates how many ships matching the colour of its circle lie FULLY within its search radius.
  • Not all possible sonar cells are shown.
  • No two sonar cells of the same colour contain the same digit.
  • In this example, the white sonar cell sees 5 white ships within its 3x3 search radius, and so contains a 5. The black sonar cell sees 3 black ships, so contains a 3. Remember: in the grid, most ships will not be shown.

I kept coming back to this one; it took me forever to get my head around the rules.
But today something clicked, and I managed to solve it. Still tricky, and it didn't make it easier that I kept forgetting to use 0-8. :-)

The opening brutalized me a few times, but I got back on my feet. In the end, I had a whale of a time!

Great fun. In my head I imagined that the ships that remained invisible after the fog lifted were submarines.

A harmonious blend of two great minds! I do love that unique tension you find in collaborative puzzles, yet this felt very much like the two of you were sympatico the whole way through. Looking forward to your next joint venture.

Lovely idea to use sweeper clues on kropki dots. The dynamic fog certainly helped with guiding the focus. Well done Marty and ChinStrap!
