Mean Quartet

(Published on 31. December 2024, 00:56 by marty_sears)

This was created for Palpot's prompt to make something 'a bit crazy' for Scojo's Setting Saturdays.

    Rules:

  • For each 4x4 quadrant of the grid, choose 4 of the digits from 0-9, and use them to fill that quadrant so that no digit repeats in any marked 2x2 box. In the overall 8x8 grid, no digit may repeat in any row or column.
  • RENBAN: Digits on the pink line form a non-repeating consecutive sequence which can appear in any order along the line.
  • REGION SUM: Box borders divide a blue line into segments whose digits each have the same sum.
  • GERMAN WHISPER: Digits along a green line have a difference of at least 5.
  • NABNER: No two digits anywhere on a yellow line may be consecutive or the same.
  • Play on Sudokupad

Took me just shy of 95 minutes, but boy howdy what a fun revelation! I had to pause it and come back with a fresh mind a couple of times. After finding the break in logic, I took my sweet time, feeling like I was learning with each careful step.

Thanks Marty! CtC and Simon got me diving into your catalogue here. After solving this I realized Simon's got a solve I'll have to check out, too. Your work is such a joy to discover, Mr. Sears!

Oof, this was hard! I must admit that I wouldn't have solved it without a bit of help from Simon's solve...
But it's a genius puzzle!

That was really fun! I had several moments of "This cannot exist!" before I had another Aha moment. Awesome experience.

This puzzle probably has the highest density of satisfying deductions/progressions to time spent - so much fun to solve.

such a unique grid forces some novel deductions. made for a satisfying aha moment. I still wasn't sure I was on the right path until I got all the digits identified.

having the solution code in the message after completing the puzzle is absolutely revolutionary. I hope a lot of constructors adopt this

Quite a few bits of interesting logic needed before you can start this one, but after that it all breaks down. Wonderful puzzle!

Wow, that took a while to get started but once I figured out the function of all the lines that was fun to solve

Wow, this was an interesting one! I enjoyed it quite a bit, but it was some very different reasoning than i normally use.

Also happens to be my first solve of 2025

Took me a year to wrap my head around it but when it clicked, it clicked well. Despite lacking cute animals running around, an amazing setting. Grats!

I found this to be a very interesting setup. Thanks for it!

Thank you for this wonderful puzzle, Marty! I have to admit that I got quite frustrated when I failed completely in my first attempt. But how worth it was to come back. The crucial idea occured to me while not looking at the grid. When I restarted, it all fell into place in a breeze. Very creative setting with a lot of beautiful interactions. Thank you for setting and sharing!
