Locked In Place (Quadruple Killer Sudoku)

(Published on 20. December 2024, 11:00 by sujoyku)

This puzzle originates from a sudden inspiration to set with quads. I thank all testers and wish you joyful solving!

- Normal sudoku rules apply, i.e. each row, column and 3x3 region has to contain the digits from 1 to 9 once each.

- Killer cages: Digits in a cage do not repeat and sum to the clue in the top left.

- Quadruple: Digits in a circle must appear in the four surrounding cells.

I rated this 2/5 difficulty.

Very fun sudoku! This really tested my ability to pencilmark effectively and it was a very nice solve! I felt like I made consistent progress throughout the solve, and it was quite enjoyable overall.

I'm not sure if coloring different parities or entropies (H/L) would have made the solve easier, but I used this puzzle as an exercise in spotting pairs/triples/quads - which was enjoyable and a different strategy than I typically use for variant solves. Having all 4 values for each of the quads made pencilmarking quite satisfying but I probably went a bit overboard with marking everything. The puzzle had some nice 'overarching' ideas that made eliminations more straightforward and had some nice logic that just kept propogating around the entire grid. Since I pencilmarked so many different cells, the whole puzzle nicely collapsed once I had placed most of the 'important' digits.

The break in was probably on the harder end of 2/5 difficulty puzzles for me, but was still generally approachable for its difficulty class. Midgame through the completion was a fair 2/5 difficulty as well.

Overall my difficulty rating would be 2/5. Thanks for sharing!

Very nice combination. I tried not to colour but had to on a couple of occassions. Thank you.

You are much welcome, GeorgeTheToad2, thank you for commenting! I think colouring might not be strictly necessary, but I used it in my own testing as well. I am glad you enjoyed this combination of constraints.
