Saddle in the Fog

(Published on 9. December 2024, 21:05 by Schma)

Saddle puzzle number 5 coming around the corner and this time hidden in the fog. Have a look at my "Saddle in the Fog" Sudoku.

As always, any comments are highly appreciated. :)

Play on SudokuPad

The rules are as follows:

  • Sudoku: Normal Sudoku rules apply.
  • Saddle: The pink circle is a saddle point and is always connected to 4 pink lines representing a saddle. Moving away from a circle, digits on a line have to either strictly increase or decrease in relation to the number in the circle. Each circle has two opposite lines with increasing property and two opposite lines with decreasing property. There is only one Saddle in the puzzle.
  • Killer: Digits in cages cannot repeat and sum to the given total. Different cages are outlined with different colors. All cages are only 1 cell wide and do not branch.
  • Kropki Dots: White dots separate consecutive digits.
  • Fog: The puzzle is partially covered in fog. Entering correct digits will clear the fog from surrounding cells.
  • There are no negative constraints

As this is my first fog puzzle, I tried to keep it approachable and would rate it 1/5. If you have trouble understanding the ruleset, check out my first puzzle (Sandwich on a Saddle) where I try to explain the ruleset a bit better.

Solution code: All digits from column 9 (top to bottom).

Cage rule is extremely misleading, saying they are only 1-cell wide implies the initial 42 cage can only ever continue downwards, which is an impossible cage to fill as it would only be 5 tall. I had to guess to reveal fog to understand what happens to the cage and I'm still not sure I understand

Schma: I'm sorry for the confusion but "1 cell wide" does not mean they have to be just straight lines. Maybe calling it "no 2x2 area shall be occupied by a single cage" might have helped? Additionally, the colors should have helped with that confusion, already seing r5c5 and r8c8 being the same color (so part of the same cage).

Very nice quick snack with a satisfying break-in.

Schma: thank you, that was the intention :)

Thanks! Took awhile to understand the killer cage rules. It was hard to see the line green cage. Besides that I really enjoyed your puzzle. Thanks!

Schma: Thanks for your comment and sorry for the complex killer rules. Will do better if I come up with another fog puzzle :)

I don't get the approval rate.
This was very nice.
At first I didn't knew how to start but everything flows very nicely when you understand the concept.

Schma: Thank you for your nice comment :)

Loved this puzzle, especially the break-in and the first few deductions with the saddle rule. I had a lot of fun solving this puzzle :D
