We're All Mad Here (Dynamic FOW)

(Published on 8. December 2024, 15:04 by gdc)

This puzzle combines the Mad Fold-In rule by Gnubeutel with the new Dynamic Fog mechanic. It was created for a setting challenge by palpot. See below for an example puzzle. Thanks to the testers. Hope you enjoy!

  • Normal Sudoku rules apply.
  • Dynamic Fog: The grid is covered in fog. Placing a correct digit in a cell lifts fog in that cell and possibly other cells; revealing new clues.
  • Mad Fold-In: The vertical dashed lines are folded onto each other so that columns 1, 2, 8 and 9 form a secondary grid. In this grid all clues are still valid.
  • Killer: Digits in a cage don't repeat and sum to the total in the top-left corner. Cages don't overlap.
  • Kropki: Digits separated by a white dot are consecutive. Not all dots are given.
  • Hitpoints: Clues outside the grid give the sum of all cells that contain a digit equal to the distance of that cell from that clue in the row or column. For example, a 4 in Row 2, Column 4 would count towards the 10 clue in row 2, and any other number would not. Horizontal distances in the folded 4x9 grid are limited to 1-4.

Example Puzzle

Here is an example that showcases all the rules (except fog) and most importantly the Fold-In rule. All clues act like they usually do in both grids. In the case of hitpoints, the 7 clue "hits" different cells in the two grids. The 2 cages combine into a single cage. The same is true for the white dots. Since r2c2 an r2c3 are connected via an open cage border, r2c7 and r2c8 must also be connected via an open cage border.

Solution code: Row 8 left to right (9 digits)

Nice puzzle! I studied the example puzzle for a while to understand this interesting ruleset. Then I completed the big one in 72:33 independently before watching CTC video.

Thank you so much for setting this. Hitpoints work great with the ruleset. Also loved the cage logic.
