Tom and Jerry

(Published on 3. December 2024, 06:57 by SXH)

Rules:
-Normal sudoku rules apply.

-Each Tom (cat) and number outside the grid represents skyscraper clues. Imagine each digit X inside the grid as a building of height X. Clues outside the grid indicate how many buildings can be seen from that direction, where higher buildings obscure the view of lower ones behind them.

-There are nine pieces of cheese in the grid, one in each row, column, and box. The hole at R1C2 and Jerry (mouse) at R9C9 do not contain cheese. Jerry needs to get all the cheese and return home without being seen by Tom on the way. Jerry's way home is a one-cell-wide route of orthogonally connected cells. The route may not intersect, overlap, or touch itself orthogonally but may touch itself diagonally. Each digit on the route is greater than all orthogonally adjacent digits outside the route.

Okay, while I had fun with the puzzle, I am quite miffed at the discrepancy between the LMD instructions and the sudokupad instructions. It's not fun as a solver to stare at a puzzle for 30 minutes only to realize that the important fact that the cheese can't be in the starting or ending cells was omitted from sudokupad.

I'm so sorry, I forgot to supplement rules in sudokupad. Thank you for pointing out my mistake.

So the cats are not really skyscraper clues, except that there must be a higher digit between the path and any cat?

Brilliant puzzle, once I understood the rules.
Some clarifications for future solvers:
- The hole is Jerry's home.
- The positions of cheese do not need to be unique.
- The skyscraper clues represented by the cats do not all need to be the same.
