SuPEArior (with SamuPiano)

(Published on 29. November 2024, 11:00 by sujoyku)

SamuPiano and I have teamed up to set another puzzle together. This time, the split peas are combined with minimum and maximum cells. For each split pea line, one of the circles is a min and the other one a max cell. For details see the rules below. We like to thank Calvinball, kendfrey, UI-Rhymm and Henry ‘Pi’ James for testing the puzzle. As always, your feedback in the comments is much welcome. We wish you joyful solving!

- Normal sudoku rules apply, i.e. each row, column and 3x3 region has to contain the digits from 1 to 9 once each.

- Split Peas: The sum of the digits on a line strictly between two circles is equal to a concatenation of the two values in the circles, in some order. For instance, 3_346_1 could be a valid split pea line, as 3+4+6=13, which is 1 concatenated with 3.

- Minimum/Maximum cells: For each split pea line, one bounding circle is a minimum and the other one a maximum cell. A minimum (resp. maximum) cell must contain a digit that is strictly lower (resp. strictly higher) than each digit in the up to four orthogonally adjacent cells. Which circle is the minimum and which the maximum cell must be determined by the solver.

It's so rare that I see fortress (min/max) clues in puzzles. They worked very well with the split peas. Gorgeous setting as always.

Thank you for your comment, gdc! We are glad that you liked the split peas/fortress cross-over. To be honest, we were quite astonished to find out that this restricts the split peas to such an extent.
Kind regards, sujoyku

As always, I loved setting with you! This is the kind of puzzle where either of us separately would likely not have been able to set anything as elegant as the final result turned out to be! So, as always, thank you for working with me; it was an absolute joy!

Thank you so much, SamuPiano! It was an absolute blast to set with you. I feel I have learned so much about setting with the Split Peas. Still, I am admiring your intuition for finding the perfect clues that resolve the puzzle so harmoniously. I hope we get to set many more puzzles together in the future.
Kind regards, sujoyku
