Dynamic Chaos (Dynamic FOW, CC)

(Published on 25. November 2024, 16:12 by gdc)

This is my second puzzle with the new dynamic fog mechanic that was introduced in Fog Of Where?. This time it's a 9x9 chaos construction. Thanks to the CtC discord for testing and feedback!

  • Chaos Construction: Divide the grid into nine orthogonally connected nine-cell regions, and place the digits 1-9 once in each row, column, and region.
  • Dynamic Fog: The grid is covered in fog. Placing a correct digit in a cell lifts fog in that cell and possibly other cells; revealing new clues.
  • Squares: A digit in a square is equal to the sum of the (up to 8) surrounding digits that are in different regions.
  • CC Kropki Pairs: Digits separated by a white dot differ by 1 and belong to the same region.
  • CC Successor Arrows: A digit N on an arrow counts how many cells it sees of its region in the indicated direction, including itself. Region borders block vision. Additionally, the digit N+1 must appear immediately behind the first seen region border.

What Is Dynamic Fog?

The fog in this puzzle is different from the usual fog of war. Placing a correct digit in a cell can lift fog only in that cell, in multiple cells (including cells on the other side of the grid) or lead to no lifted fog at all.*

Since this is a rather new development, it is only available in the alpha- and beta-version of SudokuPad at the moment. Thanks Sven for constantly improving the world of variant sudoku!

*In this specific puzzle, fog will always lift from the cell that is being correctly entered, but that might be different in other puzzles that use dynamic fog.

Every step of the puzzle was lovely. I love that the dynamic fog shows me where to put my attention, because I get overwhelmed with puzzles when I can't figure out where to look. This helps me to think through one thing at a time and have that wonderful "aha!" feeling, which I got at least a dozen times in this puzzle. Thanks for a great one :)

I really enjoyed this! I love fog puzzles and chaos constructions, and I felt like the solve flowed really well. Awesome job.

update puzzle link to the prod version of sudokupad (no longer necessary to play it in beta)

Fantastic puzzle, I've often been frustrated by chaos construction puzzles but this one made more sense. Thank you!

The best use of dynamic fog I have seen so far, I really like the way the cc arrows interact. Thank you!

Really nice puzzle. Hate to pile on but I REALLY dislike the solution code. Sorry!

I loved this puzzle, but still adjusting to the lack of instant gratification in this latest twist on fog. I agree with others, while the puzzle was fantastic...I really didn't like the approach to the solution code.

This was a good one, gdc!
It felt a strong 3* for me.
Thanks for setting.

Love chaos construction puzzles - this sort of played like a dense fog puzzle but not quite. I do like this new dynamic fog definitely walks you through the puzzle much more so than usual fog as it basically reveals where precisely to look next or that you have more logic to wring out before you can move on. It could definitely be used as a training tool for those new to variant sudoku or if introducing a new rule set as a way to try to force attention to the correct locations.

Not a fan of the solution code.

Thank you for this lovely puzzle, gdc! I am not very experienced when it comes to chaos construction. And although this was very challenging, it felt as if the fog highlighting took me by the hand helping me to focus on the right spots. Great construction!

I found that extremely beautiful, well done.

as someone that gets very frustrated with chaos construction and gives up on them. this was a welcome change of pace, as this also serves as a fantastic introduction to those types of puzzles, since the fog guides you along the logic

good stuff

Im absolutely stunned by these new puzzles. Inserting a digit looking for new revealed clues. And going on even ic nothing happend. Awesome setting thx.

Thanks someguy209! You didn't skip any logic there. The fog clearance you mention is more of a signal to look for a specific kind of logic next. I think the end solve is very narrow and so decided to add this extra signal.

A very fun use of the emerging breakthroughs in fog, and a great CC to boot. Loved how the CC successor arrows were used to create interesting geometry. My only question is why placing the digit in r4c5 reveals the cell in r3c6, as I already had the other side of the kropki! Even with whatever logical jump I ended up making, I very much enjoyed this.

Lovely! I can tell we are just seeing the surface scratched with this new fog and already making great puzzles with it.
