Where the Wild Things Are

(Published on 17. November 2024, 08:44 by starwarigami)

Normal Sudoku Rules Apply

Within a cage digits must not repeat, and their values always sum to a whole number.
This is equal to the number in the top left corner of the cage, if given.

In every row, column and box there is a single wild digit, and each digit is wild exactly once.
A wild digit applies two modifiers to the grid, one from each of the groups below.

Group 1
  • 1a: The wild digit only contributes half its face value to any cage total.
  • 1b: The wild digit must be in a 2:1 ratio with at least two of its orthogonal neighbours.
  • 1c: The wild digit must have the opposite parity (odd/even) to all its orthogonal neighbours.
Group 2
  • 2a: The orthogonal neighbours of the wild digit contribute double their face value to any cage total.
  • 2b: The wild digit must be consecutive with at least two of its orthogonal neighbors.
  • 2c: The wild digit must be less than all its orthogonal neighbours.

One group applies to the entropy sets ({123},{456},{789}) and the other to the modularity sets ({147},{258},{369}).
Which group is which, and which modifier is applied to which set is to be determined by the solver.

E.g. If you were to determine that the set {258} applies modifier 1a and the set {456} applies modifier 2b, then the wild 5 would only contribute 2.5 to any cage total and would need to be adjacent to at least 2 consecutive digits (4 or 6)

The bottom row of the grid can be used to record any deductions made and does not form part of the final solution.

Ingenious puzzle with lots of nice conclusions.

Once I had digested the implications of the rules, the solution was no longer too difficult.
