This one goes to 11

(Published on 13. November 2024, 20:18 by SuperMikal)

Normal Sudoku rules sort of apply, except this one goes to 11: Fill in the cells with the numbers 0 through 11 such that each row, column and box contains 9 distinct numbers.

Additionally, each valid set of numbers can only be used in at most one row, one column and one box (e.g. each row must be different from every other row but could repeat a column or box, and likewise for every column and every box).

The classic set of the numbers 1 through 9 is not allowed due to being deemed bogus, lame, square etc. However, every row, column and box must still pay homage to The Secret(1) of these numbers.

The online versions have extra gray cells for taking notes, and use letters A and B instead of 10 and 11 for the sake of easier pencil marking (while the solution code should still be given as all numbers) .

Bonus task:

Can you guess how many valid sets of 9 numbers there are, given these rules? It's going to be helpful anyway to make a list of them for quick reference.

Open v1 with numbers in Penpa+

Open v3 with letters in Penpa+

Open v3 with letters in Sven's Sudokupad

(1): They must add up to 45

Solution code: The center box, separate each number with a dash, for example 0-1-2-3-4-5-11-10-9. In case you played online with the letter tool, use numbers 10 and 11 here, not letters A and B.

Really fun and original! I screwed up a pencil mark at one point and had to use the partial solution check to find it, but given the sheer volume of pencil marks I don't really feel bad about that. ^_^

It's one thing to construct a sudoku using 0-9, but it takes some real audacity to invite 10 and 11 to the party. Of course, my favorite puzzles are the most outrageous ones.

What a cool concept with such a refreshing and very well-crafted solve path!
I'd rather put this one as 4/5 stars here because lots of notations were required to keep track of the different sets (at least for my case) but honestly, everything was resolved in such a satisfying way ;)

Update v3, turns out v2's margins didn't actually work in Sven's Sudokupad. This time I've actually tested it, including solution check!
