Pentominous U-Bahn

(Published on 17. November 2024, 02:15 by KNT)

Tessellate the entire grid besides the black cells into pentominos (orthogonally connected regions of exactly five cells) such that no two pentominos of the same shape share an edge. Rotations and reflections of a shape are counted as the same shape. A cell with a letter indicates the shape of the pentomino that contains that cell.

Draw a totally connected loop network through the centers of some cells, which may branch or turn, but may not have any dead ends. A clue outside the grid indicates how many times the corresponding line shape (i.e. a cross, branch, straight line, or turn) appears in the corresponding row or column, irrespective of the line shape's rotation. The loop network may enter the black cells freely.

Every pentomino must satisfy one of the two following conditions:

1. All non-empty cells within the pentomino must be the same line shape. Two pentominos satisfying this condition may never be orthogonally adjacent.

2. The pentomino must contain one turn, one straight, one branch, one cross, and one empty cell.

I don't think I'll ever solve this, but you could even now still make the black cells light grey. Worth the effort?

Awesome puzzle, very challenging, congrats on #100!

Crazy difficult, but as others have said, nothing unfair. Beautiful combination of the two rulesets in the tutorials.

Really great, thanks a lot!

Brilliant puzzle. Was extremely hard for me, but one of those you just can't put down.

@peacherwu2: Congratulations on the solve! It is certainly a challenging puzzle, but I have seen that you regularly solve very hard things too, so it surprises me this is the hardest you have completed in years. Maybe the solution video in the hidden comments can elucidate some sections you struggled on?

@ibag: I didn’t even consider that, I’m too used to using red lines for everything on online solving software. Graphic design has never been my strong suit :-)

Gee! Haven't done anything harder than this for years! Yet very intriguiging throughout! I can't imagine how any *human* can come up with something like this.

Fantastic puzzle! One request: Next time, please make the black cells much lighter. Solving with paper and pencil was a bit confusing - even more so than it already is ... ;-)

I can't tell you how many times I got to the last cell and broke it. Glad I didn't quit. Very enjoyable.

Really nice puzzle, congrats on your 100th!

A worthy 100th puzzle, thanks for all them!

Immensely fun to solve, always intuitive which makes it relatively smooth! Thanks for those puzzles and congrats for the milestone =)

Great tutorial again !
Thanks 000KNT :)

Consistently challenging but without any unfair steps - as good as I expected from you. Thanks and congrats on 100 published puzzles :)

Sorry (not really) to be an eternal troll, but it's actually not the 100th puzzle you've published on LMD.. ;)

In any case I look forward to finding the time for all 3, despite pentominoes.

@ibag Obsessively checking the IDs on the sudokus tab for a couple days and about 6 blank puzzle pages...

Great puzzle, well worthy of being the 100th! Also the warm-ups are very enjoyable :)

on 17. November 2024, 12:02 by Myxo
I'm sure this will be easy.

Haha, how did you manage to get this puzzle ID?

on 17. November 2024, 07:21 by RJBlarmo
Congrats on 100 posts! I remember the first U-Bahn I did was one of yours and now it is one of my favorite genres! Fantastic puzzle too, definitely worthy of being your 100th!

Gotta say, already the timing makes this puzz 100x more worthy to solve, but I may take a while……

I've left a solving video in the hidden comments for anyone that solves it and wants to compare to my (rough) path.

But anyway... I hope you enjoy the puzzle! It feels pretty surreal to have 100 posts on Logic Masters now. Seriously, thank you to everyone that solves what I set, it has motivated me a lot over the past few years. :-)

To the next 100!
