Four Full Rank Line Miniatures

(Published on 9. November 2024, 00:25 by ralphwaldo1)

Four full rank line problem miniatures.

Rules for all puzzles

4x4 Sudoku: Place the digits 1-4 once each into every row, column and 2x2 box.

A digit in a circle indicates the rank of the number formed by reading the digits on the attached line starting from the digit next to the circle. The rank is the position in the list of all such numbers when placed in ascending order. Duplicate numbers all share the lowest tied rank.

Example valid solution (N.B. there are other valid solutions to the example puzzle)

On the higher line between the two circles are the numbers 24 when read from the circled 1, and 42 when read from the circled 4. On the lower line the number 33 is read from both directions. The circled 1 means that 24 is the lowest of these. The same number more than once on lines results in each instance receiving the same lowest rank, with higher numbers following on with their correct rank:

Number on line Rank Digit in circle
24 1st (smallest) 1
33 2nd (equal) 2
33 2
42* 4th 4

*the last number in the list is required for the solution code
