Pentominous U-Bahn (Warm-up #1)

(Published on 15. November 2024, 09:10 by KNT)

Tessellate the entire grid into pentominos (orthogonally connected regions of exactly five cells) such that no two pentominos of the same shape share an edge. Rotations and reflections of a shape are counted as the same shape.

Draw a totally connected loop network through the centers of some cells, which may branch or turn, but may not have any dead ends. A clue outside the grid indicates how many times the corresponding line shape (i.e. a cross, branch, straight line, or turn) appears in the corresponding row or column, irrespective of the line shape's rotation.

Within a pentomino, all non-empty cells must be the same line shape.

Brilliant puzzle. Perhaps I'm rusty at my U-bahn but I don't figure this to be 3*! Tricky indeed, but some very fun logic to uncover. I'm excited to tackle the next ones in the series, this has come highly recommended. Thank you!

I am going to post the "main" puzzle related to these two warm-ups in a few days. It is unusually challenging, and I highly recommending solving both of these introductory puzzles if you choose to attempt it. I hope it is a puzzle worthy of my 100th post on LM.
