A Tribute to Al Jaffee

(Published on 22. October 2024, 19:00 by Gnubeutel)

Pretend you're Al Jaffee and have to create a Mad Magazine Fold-In.

Rules

Normal Sudoku rules apply. Place the digits 1-9 in every row, column and box exactly once.

Kropki dots: cells separated by a black dot are in a 1:2 ratio, cells separated by a white dot are consecutive. Not all possible dots are given.

Killer Cages: digits in cages may not repeat and sum to the total in the top left corner.

Fold-In: The dashed red lines are folded onto each other so that column 1, 2, 8 and 9 form a secondary grid. In this grid all rules apply, except that regions and rows do not need to have all of the digits for obvious reasons (it's a 4x9 grid).
E.g. the renban in the example image in r7c1 and r8c2 will also form a renban with r7c8 and r8c9.

Example

Here's an example how the 4x9 grid is formed. Thanks to Flinty for the design.

Solution code: Digits in the fifth column from top to bottom.

These are always bit of mind benders, but love them nevertheless.

Related to those rules that could have a dual nature, a thermo could also turn into a palindrome line when folded.

Can't wait to see what comes out next from you. ;)

Very fun and creative idea with a nice execution. I wonder if there are more constraints to use with this. Arrows with between lines might be fun.

Ooh, how about a between line - that turns into an arrow by folding? I. e. a change of rules because the iconography is the same.

Love it. Made perfect sense to me, but maybe that's because the Fold-In was always my second stop with any new issue of Mad (after Spy vs. Spy :). Think I'll pull my copy of Fold This Book off my shelves and have another read.
