Balance

(Published on 3. October 2024, 21:31 by Scojo)

This puzzle was set for the CTC Discord's September 2024 monthly puzzle prompt of "Perfectly Balanced."

Rules:
  • Normal sudoku rules apply: Place the digits 1-9 once each in every row, column, and 3x3 box.
  • Balance Cells: Identify 9 Balance Cells in the grid such that there is one Balance Cell in every row, column, and 3x3 box. Each Balance Cell must contain a different digit. The value of a Balance Cell is the arithmetic mean of the up to 4 digits orthogonally adjacent to itself, regardless of the digit in the Balance Cell.
  • Global Balance: The sum of the values of every cell in the grid is 405.
  • Killer: The values of cells in a cage must sum to the total in the top left corner. Digits may not repeat within a cage, but values may.

Solve in SudokuPad

Solution code: The VALUES of every cell in row 8 from left to right. In the case of a non-integer value, round to the nearest integer (0.5 would round up to 1).

Thank you for this nice puzzle, Scojo! I watched the start of Simon solving it, but then I felt I had to have a go at it myself. In the end, I briefly thought: "Oh, really, do I need to do THAT...?" But when I started thinking in the right tracks, it was not required what I had feared. :)
Thank you for this superb construction!

Easy break-in, but later you have to do some calculations - and you have to do these much more careful than I did at first … Thank you very much for this wonderful exercise in arithmetics.
