Killer Caves

Killer Caves

Normal Sudoku rules apply.

Killer Cages:

  • Digits in a cage sum to the total shown in the top-left cell of the cage.
  • Digits do not repeat within a cage.
  • The value of cages without a given total must be determined by the solver.
  • Digits that appear in a cage also act as "cave clues".

Cave:

  • Shade some cells (the walls). Unshaded cells form a single connected group (the cave) with no enclosed, shaded cells. (I.e. all shaded "wall" cells must be connected by other shaded cells to an edge of the grid).
  • All "cave clues" must be a part of the cave, with each number indicating the total count of cave cells connected vertically and horizontally to the numbered cell including the cell itself.
  • There is exactly one digit that does not appear anywhere in the cave.

Re-wording of cave rules for clarity

The solve was nice and had a good flow to it, finding a start was tough but doable and finding following steps was very intuitive! Thank you for this puzzle.

The cave clue was worded a bit odly, as said by Kafkapharnaum. This made the 2 cell 14 cage a bit odd to resolve.

Response from ste221093: Thanks for solving and glad you enjoyed :) Thanks for the feedback on the cave rules, I will rethink the wording. Just to clarify, is the problem that the "non-cave" cells having to connect to the edge of the grid is not clear?

As I read it, the shaded cells form the cave. The use of 'leave behind' can be interpreted as 'create'. After rereading it a couple times I saw that you meant that the shaded cells form the edges of the cave, making that a single connected region.

Welcome back, and thanks for this beautiful cave puzzle (really love the look of the finished grid!). That was my first of this kind and I quite enjoyed it, even as once past the generous start, to me it felt harder than 3/5 (and the sudoku for the close was hardly trivial too, but I quite liked how that last bit of rule played out :-).
Now I know how a cave/coral plays, but I had to refresh my memory to the effect that both shadings need to connect to an edge; as the rules are now, it reads like this only applies to the cave part. But nevermind that -- bravo for setting this impressively minimalistic cave sudoku!

Repsponse from ste221093: Thank you for the kind words and feedback! I'm glad the fluctuations in difficulty weren't too off-putting :)
