Zodiac Project: Gemini

(Published on 19. September 2024, 13:18 by Christounet)

Here is the 13th chapter of the Zodiac Project, initiated by ViKingPrime. When I was given the task to set the next puzzle in this serie, I knew I wanted to do something with a thematic symbolic tone to it. Inspiration took quite a long time to come to me. Finally, when I was thinking of the astrological sign I could use as a theme, the concept of these Gemini grids emerged. Two grids that would look exactly identical. They would therefore have a lot in common, like the twins in the mythology. Yet, because of little differencies that the eye cannot see (namely the property of the 2 sets of circles), they would eventually lead to different solutions. And of course, like the twins, they couldn't exist without each other. Here is the result. Enjoy !

Play on Sudokupad (version with the grids side by side)

Play on Sudokupad (version with the grids above/below)

Rules :

- Normal sudoku rules apply in both grids.

- Circles / Doublers : in each grid, the circles contain a complete set of the digits 1-9. For each pair of circles in the same position in both grids, the digit is the same. In one of the grids, the value of the cell is double the value of the digit. In the other grid, the value is unchanged. The doublers are not necessarily all in the same grid. It is up to the solver to determine in which grid each digit is doubled.

- Killer cages : Digits can not repeat in a cage. The values of the cells in a cage must sum to the total in the top left corner (except the 28 cage which is in the top right), if given. If the total is not given, it still has to be the same for the 2 cages that are in the same position in the 2 grids.

- Note : as both grids are identical, no anwser check is provided, because the solved grids could be switched.

Illustration of the ruleset on a partial grid :

In this example, doublers are in blue, normal digits are in yellow. The 2 cells cage has a total of 5 in both grids

Solution code: Row 3 of the grid with the largest amount of doublers, then row 2 of the other grid.

Gorgeous setting and quite a wonderful and engaging solve till the very end! Funny to see how the big cage works and then the final resolution of both grids x)

Thank you for this absolutely incredible puzzle, Christounet! I mispencilmarked somewhere in my first attempt and had to restart. Luckily, it went super-smooth in my second try. This is such an astonishing construction that I am lacking words to give it the praise it deserves. Thank you very much for setting and sharing these miracle twins!

This puzzle is a stunning construction, and solving it fully captivated my attention and was incredible fun. Don’t be intimidated to try this one! It seemed at first that scanning would be challenging, but I found it very, very smooth and the next place to look always felt clear to me!

This will be a very tough act to follow for me, but I’m up for the challenge!
