The King

(Published on 18. September 2024, 19:33 by vitaminz)

This puzzle is dedicated to my dad, inspired by this week's Scojo prompt suggested by heliopolix (using points from ViKingPrime). A huge thank you to Marty Sears for testing, inspiration, rule clarity, and surely other help I'm forgetting. Without our discussions I probably would have left this in it's "v1" state. Please leave a comment if you enjoy it!

RULES:

Normal Sudoku Rules Apply

The King's Law states that for a digit X, exactly X instances of the digit X are a king's move away from another instance of the digit X. However, two of the digits 1-9 (to be deduced) are rebellious and do not abide by this law. In fact, a rebellious digit is never a king's move away from another instance of itself.

The grid is partially covered with fog. Correctly placed digits will clear the fog around that cell.

Watch on Cracking the Cryptic

Solution code: Row 4 from left to right, with the "rebellious" digits removed (7 digits)

Brilliant, one of my new favorite puzzles! Also, I haven’t seen anyone mention it, but I believe knowledge of the Phistomefel Ring is needed to solve this puzzle.

Was a huge pleasure to test and help to hone this stunning puzzle - such a simple core idea with far-reaching consequences that take you into unexpected and surprising places. The break-in is satisfying, the middle is smooth, and the ending is delicious. What more could you want? I think this is my new favourite Vitaminz puzzle.

Very enjoyable! I really liked the break in on this one. Took some time to think through the global constraint, but very satisfying. Great construction!
