19 Shapes of Grey

(Published on 13. September 2024, 21:51 by Elytron)

I recently watched a stream by Old Man Joe Gaming where he was solving one of my puzzles with fog and X/V clues. Hereby the problem presented, that sometimes the X/V can seem almost indistinguishable when they are halfway covered in fog. This led to the idea of creating a ruleset where this ambiguity is baked into the puzzle, which is how this puzzle came into existence. :)

Solve with SudokuPad.

Rules:

  • Normal Sudoku rules apply.

  • Digits separated by a black shape are in a 1:2 ratio, digits separated by a white shape are consecutive, and digits separated by a gray shape are neither.

  • Shapes are made up of semi-circles and semi-squares, resulting in either a full circle, a full square, or a "circle-square", these may be rotated in any direction.
  • Digits separated by a circle add up to 9, digits separated by a circle-square add up to 12, and digits separated by a square add up to 15.

  • Fog: The grid is partially covered with fog. Correctly placed digits will clear the fog around that cell. No guessing is required.
The possible shapes are as follows:

Solution code: Column 4 from top to bottom (9 digits).

Loved it. Thank you!

One of my favorite puzzles I've solved! Loved the logic involved with only knowing one half of the shapes, and the negative constraint with the grey shapes was very neat as well. Very nice!

What a satisfying solve! Really original. Thank you!

Incredibly fun solve! Definitely makes me curious at what other fun ways setters could use half-hidden clues

Loved the negative constraint, and the logic to figure out the sum of a partially hidden shape. Extremely clever and original.

That's a really clever ruleset, and I like how the grey shapes let you do sort of a partial negative constraint on the usual kropki. Lots of fun solving this.

Lovely puzzle - really enjoyed this ruleset. Tricky at first but as the rules became more ingrained the puzzle went quicker and quicker.

Very fun ruleset.

An extremely witty puzzle. I love the deliberate use of the foggy ambiguity to shape the solve. Top marks!

I like this idea.
I had to wrap my head around the rules so they become intuitive

Nice puzzle! I think it's closer to 2* than 3.
Thanks for setting!

PS: Solution code says (6 digits) but it's 9 :)

Oh, I actually wanted to put 2 stars but apparently misclicked! Also thanks for out the mistake, that seemed to be copied over from another puzzle D: -Elytron
