Steel Vengeance (Chaos Deconstruction Rollercoaster)

(Published on 2. September 2024, 08:00 by tallcat)

My original Rollercoaster Deconstruction puzzle (found here) was such a fun puzzle to set that I knew I would want to make a follow up. This time, I decided to switch to a Chaos Deconstruction for some added spice. It took me a while to get something I liked but I am very pleased with how it turned out! Happy solving!

Chaos Deconstruction: Nine orthogonally connected regions containing the digits 1-9 must be located. Digits may not repeat in any row, column, or region. Cells outside of a region do not contain digits.

Roller Coaster: Draw a non-intersecting loop that travels orthogonally between the centers of some cells in the grid. Clues on the left give the sum of digits on horizontal loop segments in that row in the correct order. Clues above give the sum of digits on vertical loop segments in that column in the correct order. A "?" may replace any value from 0-9, but for double digit numbers, the first digit may not be 0. For each row or column, either all or no clues are provided.

On a single round trip of the loop, every region must be visited exactly once. The loop may pass through empty cells, which count as 0 towards the sum(s) they are part of.

Arrows: A number placed on a cell with an arrow indicates the total number of empty cells in the direction of that arrow (With respect to arrows, 'empty' means the cell does not have a digit in, but it may still have loop). An arrow cell must not be empty.

Can be solved at Sudokupad or Penpa
(Answer Check on Penpa with green line and blue sudoku digits)

Solution code: Row 1 (left to right) and row 4 (left to right) with '-' to denote empty cells

Brilliant! Every rule you can think of is used in this puzzle. Even though it took me quite a while, the solve is smooth and very well balanced on a challenging level. I‘ve loved solving this roller coaster - thank you for sharing!

That was beautiful - loved the opening, then got stuck for a while as I wasn't appreciating some RC deductions. I found the later deductions to be most impressive with how much could be squeezed out of so few clues. Thank you! :)

Great puzzle! I didn't find it as hard as some comments suggest.

Impressive construction ! Reminded me of a puzzle by Xendari (https://logic-masters.de/Raetselportal/Raetsel/zeigen.php?id=000DR6.). Thanks :)

REPLY: Yes, I had started solving that puzzle when i was thinking up ideas for my own but only got part way through before the setting bug took over. I need to get back to it!

What a lovely yet wild ride throughout! A fairly manageable first half with a very consistent later half that contained a lot of tiny details to keep track of, but I wasn't totally stuck at any point. ;)

Can you have a one cell loop segment?

REPLY: Segments by definition will cover two cells - but it is plausible that one of those cells may not have a digit in
