Dutch Flat Mates (Thripper Lines)

(Published on 4. September 2024, 11:30 by Flinty)

Initial Setter Difficulty: 3/5 (Potentially 2/5 after review)

Normal Sudoku rules apply.
Place the digits 1-9 so that they do not repeat in any row, column, or 3x3 box.

Dutch Flats
Every 5 in the grid must have a 1 directly above it or a 9 directly below it. It may have both, but it doesn't need both.

Thripper Lines
Digits an equal distance from the centre of a Thripper line sum to the same total, which is the value of the digit placed in that line's centre (highlighted with a bump). E.g. R1C4 + R1C6 + R3C5 = R2C5.

Special Thanks to the YouTubers
This puzzle is based on a constraint I made by adapting Zipper Lines. My original puzzle was fortunate enough to receive a CTC feature, and much more recently a Bremster feature; which helped put it back on my radar to Flatmate.

Extra Flat Mates
These excellent puzzles use the Dutch Flat Mates constraint:
The Hunt for the 5's by antiknight
Roommate Somedoku by gdc.
The streamer OlliWright affectionately calls them "Bootleg Flatmates".

I missed August!
Thank you to Marty Sears, Sujoyku, GoodCity and especially gdc who didn't get a mention in my last puzzle prior to my extended break.

Hint to Start

The Thrippers in Box 7 and Box 9 are first very restricted by maths, and then by Flat Mates.

On my first try I couldn't figure it out. Not even after reading the hint.
But starting fresh after 2 days It clicked and took me around half an hour to solve.
Enjoyed it that time.

I found this one to be much harder to wrap my head around than the average Dutch flat mates, but once I wrapped my head around the logic, it was very satisfying.

Yay! More thripper lines! As always, nice interactions with the DFM. And very smooth if you ask the right questions.

Thank you for this amazing puzzle, Flinty! It is so packed with fun deductions and the interaction of the constraints felt well-balanced. Very neat setting!
