From Dusk Till Dawn (159 variant + numbered rooms sudoku)

(Published on 28. August 2024, 22:01 by Qodec)

This puzzle was created for Scojo's puzzle prompt of last week, to set puzzles with indexing constraints. This sudoku combines two of them.

  • Sudoku: Each row, column, and region indicated by thick borders in the grid must contain the digits 1 to 9 once each.
  • 37: Digits in column 3 indicate the column in which the digit 3 appears in that row (e.g. if r4c3 is a 6, r4c6 is a 3). The same is true of column 7 and the digit 7. This is a variant of the more common 159 rule.
  • Numbered rooms: Clues outside the grid indicate the digit which has to be placed in the Nth cell in the corresponding direction, where N is the digit placed in the first cell in that direction. Example: if r1c9 is a 4, then because of the 1 clue the fourth cell counting from the east to the west in row 1, r1c6, is a 1.

Solution code: Row 8 and column 8. I.e. the 9 digits in row 8 from left to right, followed by the 9 digits in column 8 from top to bottom, for example: 123456789123456789

Here are the links to my solve. Yes, there are TWO, because it took me that long to solve it and I needed a break to get my head on right for it!

Maybe I'm just not cognizant of all the implications of Numbered Rooms and column indexing constraints, but this took me over 3 hours to solve and it was NOT easy or average. I figured out a whole bunch of constraints which I guess might help me in the future with these type of puzzles, but if you don't understand the constraints with these rulesets, it could be a VERY HARD puzzle to solve.

Still, the construction IS brilliant, and after finally solving the puzzle, I recognize how brilliant it was to set.

I just hope I've learned enough from this puzzle to make future numbered rooms or indexed column puzzles much less painful to solve.

Fun puzzle!
