yes! they are the cake layers.
it was supposed to be a hint for something but the hint is not really needed.

I think the stripes in the background are just layers of cake and frosting. I would have gone with a 1-2-1-2-1-2 pattern. It avoids the skinny layer in the middle, and you don’t need icing on the bottom, but that’s me, I’m a baker! ;-)
