A discussion with SamuPiano has led to a nice collaboration between us two. I have learned a lot about the Split Pea Lines constraint, which can be thought of as pill arrows where the pill digits do not have to be located next to each other. The main idea of SamuPiano and me was to combine the pea lines with other line type constraints. The puzzle “Last Resort” uses region sum lines and its difficulty should lie around 2 stars. If you are looking for other introductory puzzles, I like to refer to Peas and Quiet by SamuPiano which I enjoyed deeply. Also note that this puzzle here actually is the second puzzle we set together. If you like it, be on the lookout since there is more fun pea line stuff to come next week! As always, your comments are much appreciated. We wish you joyful solving!
- Normal sudoku rules apply, i.e. each row, column and 3x3 region has to contain the digits from 1 to 9 once each.
- Region sum lines: Box borders divide the blue lines into segments with the same sum. (Different lines may have different sums.)
- Split pill arrows/Pea lines: The sum of the digits on a line strictly between two circles is equal to a concatenation of the two values in the circles, in some order. For instance, 3_346_1 could be a valid split pea line, as 3+4+6=13, which is 1 concatenated with 3. (Note: The bounding circles are NOT part of the region sums.)
- Inequality: The inequality sign is a "greater than" and points to the lower digit.
Here you can solve the puzzle online:
Solution code: Column 5 from top to bottom (9 digits in total)

Very nice puzzle! I believe I was able to solve it without any logic depending on the inequality.
**
Thank you for your comment, softie! We are glad that you enjoyed the puzzle. Regarding the inequality: You are right. We were also aware that it is not strictly required for uniqueness of the solution, but we did not find a nice argument other than bifurcating to finish it off. Please feel free to describe in a hidden comment your deductions to complete the central rows and columns.

Lovely introduction to split peas. Not too tricky, not trivial, just really nice.

I hope there are much more to come. You definitely got me hooked on the Pea lines so it is very likely I will set more with these in the future.
