Formula 1 at Zandvoort

(Published on 23. August 2024, 12:30 by bboom)

Note: For anyone who wants to try the puzzle but doesn't follow Formula 1, I have added a version with normal clues that don't require prior knowledge: A Day at the Races.

This puzzle takes you along an F1 qualifying lap around Zandvoort. To successfully complete your lap, you will need to know a bit about Formula 1, and the following rules as well:

  • Normal sudoku rules apply.
  • Staying on the track is faster. All digits on the track are greater than orthogonally adjacent digits that are not on the track.
  • Sector 1 is a Dutch Whisper sector (of course). Adjacent numbers on the track in that sector must have a difference of at least 4.
  • Sector 2 is a region sum sector. In each box the sector enters, the sum of all cells containing a part of the track of sector 2 will be equal.
  • Sector 3 is a parity sector. The numbers along the track in this sector alternate between odd and even.
  • Driver cages cannot have repeating digits, and the sum of the digits in the cage will equal the driver number of the driver in the top left corner.

wacfwaef Fair comment! I've actually prepared a version of the puzzle for people who don't follow Formula 1 but do want to try the puzzle.

I'll release that now actually, in case you want to give it a try without all the googling.

I understand this puzzle being easy for people who know about F1 but for people who don't know, this puzzle has no indication which of the sectors belong to which line color, then no indication about who actually are the drivers of formula 1 mentioned in the killer cages by just 3 letters so we're supposed to research 1st who the drivers even are to match the name and then after research the driver numbers.
It took me 20 minutes just to figure that out and I already give up before even having an attempt.

Very cool ruleset and awesome preparation for qualifying in a couple minutes. Not sure if intended but nice detail on the Hamilton cage resembling a 4.

Superb, thank you! Too often with highly thematic puzzles, the design is at the expense of the sudoku but the logic in this was a joy from lights out to the chequered flag :-)

Really fun, I enjoyed the "staying on the track is fastest" rule :)

As an avid F1 fan for many years I had to solve this one, and did so while listening to FP1 in the background :) Very thematic. I also got pole position it seems :P
