Contrast Killer

(Published on 14. August 2024, 08:30 by Nordy)

Another puzzle inspired by a collaboration with yttrio.

Rules:

Normal Sudoku rules apply.

Normal Killer: Within each cage, digits cannot repeat and must sum to the value in the upper-left corner (if given).

Contrast Killer: Each cage must be shaded entirely pink or entirely green, so that:

  • (Pink → Renban) Digits within a pink cage form a consecutive set
  • (Green → German Whispers) Orthogonally-adjacent digits within a green cage differ by at least 5

Contrast Killer rules apply only within an individual cage, not necessarily across cages.

Solve online:

Solution code: Digits in pink cells, read left to right, in Row 2 then Row 4 then Row 6

That is a very good puzzle. Earlier it seems that lots of maths is involved but after some time you see what is happening and the calculations are very limited.

Very pretty. Lots of the steps made me feel like I was in your brain - I'd think about the possibilities for a cage, realize I didn't have enough information, and then have exactly what I'd thought about be proven or disproven. Just a great flow to this one.

A romp of a good time! It certainly had some tough spots, but every single one was clean and satisfying. The ambiguity was also super intuitive and never a chore, while still being far from trivial.

What a lovely puzzle! Not too easy for me, I did get stuck quite a few times, but the deductions when they came were always very satisfying. Most of all I loved the concept - simple to understand and brilliantly executed. The break-in was slick and the ending was too!

Great puzzle! It was really neat how each new deduction allowed the next cage to be disambiguated pretty much all the way through the solve.

Smooth as silk, thank you very much for the puzzle

Very lovely and well made puzzle. Break in took couple second, but after that so creamy and nice followup!
Difficulty was enough hard to keep interest.
