Delray Beach Sunrise (Yin-YANG Fillomino)

(Published on 6. August 2024, 04:04 by MaizeGator)

Background: Delray Beach is a beautiful city located on Florida’s Atlantic Coast. It is a great place to watch the sunrise.

“Delray Beach Sunrise” is “Side B” of a double puzzle. In “Side A” (Destin Sunset), the arrow clues reference the polyominos that are OPPOSITE the parity of the arrow (alluding to “yin”). Here, however, the arrows reference polyominoes of the SAME parity as the arrow (alluding to “yang”).

I hope you enjoy both! Please reach out on Discord @MaizeGator if you ever need a hint.

Rules:

  • Fillomino: Divide the grid into polyominoes and fill each cell with a number equal to the size of its polyomino. Polyominoes of the same size may not share an edge.

  • Yin-Yang: Shade some cells such that all shaded cells are orthogonally connected and all unshaded cells are orthogonally connected. No 2x2 area may be fully shaded or unshaded.

  • Parity: All odd polyominoes are shaded, while all even polyominoes are unshaded.

  • “Yang” Arrows: Numbers on cells with an arrow indicate the number of polyominoes of the SAME shading/parity seen in the direction of the arrow. Arrows do not count their own cell, but may count their polyomino if a cell within its polyomino is visible in the direction of the arrow.

What a beautiful, beautiful puzzle! The polyominoes are such crazy ass shapes, It felt wrong during the solve. A most worthy candidate for Simon’s newly-introduced weekend logic puzzle solve. Thanks for setting and sharing this masterpiece.

I was very happy and satisfied finishing the puzzle just to realise that it was the example :D.
At least it was good practice, now to the real puzzle

Edit: the real puzzle is 10x harder, made a lot of mistakes, but still awesome.

One of my favourite puzzles I've solved! The theming (together with "Side A") is subtle at first, but extremely artful as it revealed itself throughout the solve.
