Copycat Choco Banana

(Published on 6. August 2024, 01:46 by Scojo)

Rules:
  • Normal sudoku rules apply: Place the digits 1-9 once each in every row, column, and 3x3 box.
  • Choco Banana: Shade some cells so that every orthogonally connected group of shaded cells is rectangular, and every orthogonally connected group of unshaded cells is non-rectangular. Squares are rectangles, and a group may consist of just one cell.
  • Copycat Cells: All shaded cells act as copycat cells. A copycat cell's value is defined as the digit in the cell rotationally opposite itself in the grid, regardless of the digit that actually appears in the copycat cell. For example, if r2c3 contains the digit 5, and r8c7 contains the digit 9, and r2c3 is shaded, the value of r2c3 is the digit in r8c7, which is 9.
  • Arrows: Values along an arrow sum to the value in the attached circle. Additionally, the value in an arrow's circle represents the number of cells in its shaded or unshaded group.

Tricky one. Wrapping my head around the ruleset took some time, but the resulting deductions were clever and fair. Might have been easier by visualizing some examples first.

Very fun and tough logic in this one. Definitely takes a bit to internalize the rules get started, but the logical flow of the mid-solve is magical.
