RAT RUN 10: Sensored

(Published on 7. August 2024, 01:01 by marty_sears)

Rules:
  • Normal sudoku rules apply: place the digits 1-9 once each in every row, column, and 3x3 box (marked with dotted lines.)
  • AIM OF EXPERIMENT: Finkz the rat must reach the cupcake by finding a path through the maze. The path must not visit any cell more than once, cross itself, or pass through any thick maze walls.
  • As well as moving orthogonally, Finkz may move diagonally if there's a 2x2 space in which to do so, but may never pass diagonally through a round wall-spot on the corner of a cell.
  • FOG: The maze has been filled with fog. When correct digits are entered, the nearby fog will clear. No guessing is required.
  • BLACKCURRANTS: Digits connected by a blackcurrant are in a 1:2 ratio (one is double the other.) Not all possible blackcurrants have been given.
  • MOTION SENSORS: The digit on a pink motion sensor indicates how many of the (up to 9) cells immediately surrounding the sensor are visited by Finkz - ie; any cells neighbouring the sensor cell (diagonally or orthogonally), as well as the sensor cell itself, are counted, if they lie on the path.
  • CAGES: Digits don't repeat in a cage. Every cage has an electricity symbol, which indicates its 'shock value'. Any cage with a shock value of 5 or higher should not be entered by Finkz. Cages with a shock value lower than 5 are safe to enter.
  • TEST CONSTRAINT: In this experiment, the first cage that Finkz enters could have any total. After that, each subsequent cage she enters must have a total exactly one greater than the previous cage she entered. Cages not entered by Finkz can have any total.

Solution code: Digits on the path in column 8, from top to bottom

Absolutely wonderful series! I enjoyed every single sudoku, and they didn’t feel the slightest bit repetitive while maintaining the common theme

What a season finale!

Delightful solve! I'd say it's more like 2 stars.

Personal achievement unlocked - it's the first solve I've ever done alongside a CTC video that I was able to solve faster than Simon (primarily due to him getting hung up with an issue in box 5 for about 10 minutes that I fortunately caught right away).

Oddly enough, I think I found this to be easiest one of the Rat Runs to complete and the puzzle itself featured interesting and fun logic throughout. An easy 10/10.

I CANT BELIEVE I WAS ABLE TO SOLVE A DIFFICULTY THREE PUZZLE IN 66 MINUTES!!! THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST WONDERFUL SUDOKU PUZZLES TO EVER EXIST!!!

MY FIRST EVER 3* PUZZLE COMPLETION! :-)
Saw this was available just after watching Simon solve #9 so thought I'd jump in and give it a go. So, so satisfying especially unravelling the deviousness at the end. Thanks, Marty!

Lovely, the forgetting I can go diagonally remains my nemesis :D

Looking forward to the next phase of experiments !! Would love to see Finkz find her way in different formats of grids (linked grids, deconstruction...). And if that is not your intention, I'm happy to try my hand at setting some maze puzzles as well if you don't mind ! Thanks for the great serie :)

Marty: Thankyou - I do have some different formats planned later on in the series :)

Rule clarification: the "shock value" refers ONLY to the cell with the lightning bolt, NOT the total sum of the cage with said lightning bolt.

Already looking forward to the Phase 2!

I was so looking forward to this puzzle, me on holidays, time to solve this at the beach. But it came differently and I needed emergency surgery and lied in the hospital.
With too many painkillers clouding my mind, I didn't manage to start the puzzle. I thought "how can I manage this , without assumptions".
Now about too weeks later with not so many painkillers anymore, I took a second go and I solved it in 80minutes.
I thought it required a lot of thinking-ahead, but it needed no assumptions whatsoever and it had a very nice touch with the fog. Loved it. Couple of times, I thought, to solve this or that, this is needed behind the fog.

Loved all the series, thank you so much marty! And I am looking forward to the next batch in autumn!

I think the shock cages have been my favourite rule in the past two puzzles – they interact so well with rules that influence cage totals. An amazing set of puzzles, can't wait for series 2!

Thanks so much for this series. It's been enormous fun following Finkz's adventures!

Column 9. So clever. Great puzzle

on 13. August 2024, 01:25 by Snaques
What a finish for the little rodent!

The finishing touches were a bit devious as it really made me question whether I missed a rule or something. Just had to go through all the rules once more to realize what's going on there.

Thank you Marty for the amazing series!

Already looking forward to the Phase 2!

Again a brilliant puzzle to end phase 1. I really liked how the last cage disambiguates within the rules. I wish I could set puzzles like these. Compared to Finks‘s adventures, mine are all amateur level. I‘m looking forward to the next season in autum. Thanks Marty.

Everything I wanted from the series, from the very beginning. I cannot wait for Season 2 - I think we're all ready for the mad science to begin.

OMG, what a fantastic finale for a fantastic series! For a strange reason this was the most approachable experiment for me - maybe because the fog. :) Beautiful break-in, smooth flow, nice deductions and logic from start to finish. I can not wait Phase 2... Thank you Marty for this fun, enjoyable, mind blowing and totally bonkers series! You are trully a genius. :)

Another amazing puzzle, with lovely constraints that don't feel too complicated simply because of how you led us here over the course of this series.

These were the absolute highlight of my week lately.

I now have very similar feelings as when I've just watched the last episode of my current favourite tv show and have to wait an unspecified amount of time for the next season.

Marty: the end of Phase 1... Finkz will be back in a couple of months :)

Unbelievably good!

Dynamite work Marty! This was such a joy to complete, and it had me skipping ahead of the CTC YouTube timeline and into LMD (with a bookmark reminding me each week to jump in and solve the next puzzle on Day 1). Thank you!

Brilliant, thought I had gone wrong for a little while until I carfully reread the rules again !!!!

The fog really gave the solver the same maze feeling as Finkz. Masterful finale for a masterful series. I loved how different each one of these played.

Awesome puzzle to end an awesome series. Thx for many hours of thrilling entertainment.

What a way to round things out! Finkz's faith and determination to forage for the illusive cupcake was duly rewarded! And that final flourish was, as ever, classy :)

on 7. August 2024, 12:55 by davidemsa
The entire series has been amazing. I'm looking forward to seeing Finkz again in phase 2. This being a fog of war puzzle made it play out pretty differently from the others, which is great. There was a tricky step near the end I really liked.
