OmniLS #5: Taking the scenic route

(Published on 29. July 2024, 11:00 by sujoyku)

This is the fifth edition of the Omnipotent Line Series (OmniLS). Moreover, last week there has appeared an Omnipotent Lines puzzle in the fantastic Dutch Flat Mates series of Flinty. The previous puzzles with Omnipotent Lines have been:

Puzzle #1: Anything works

Puzzle #2: Divinity Through the Fog by meggen033

Puzzle #3: Omnipotent Butterfly

Puzzle #4: Mighty Triangle

DFM Guest Spot: Dutch Flat Mates (Omnipotent Lines)

This puzzle has the title “Taking the scenic route” and probably is the most challenging puzzle of the series so far. A loop must be drawn into the grid which then acts as an Omnipotent Line. As additional clues, there are a few quadruples and Non-Loop sum clues that indicate the sum of all non-loop digits in the respective row or column up to the first loop cell. For a detailed description of the ruleset see below. As always, I highly appreciate your comments and wish you happy solving!

- Normal sudoku rules apply, i.e. each row, column and 3x3 region has to contain the digits from 1 to 9 once each.

- Quadruple: Digits in a circle must appear in one of the four surrounding cells.

- Omnipotent Loop:

1) Loop-Drawing: Draw a one-cell wide loop into the puzzle. The loop may only move orthogonally from cell to cell, does not branch or cross itself and must not touch itself neither orthogonally nor diagonally.

2) Omnipotent Line: The loop forms a so-called Omnipotent Line, i.e. each pair of adjacent digits on the loop must fulfill either an X, V, white or black Kropki dot clue. In other words, any pair of adjacent digits on the loop must sum to 5 or 10, be consecutive or in a 1:2 ratio. (At least one of these constraints must be met, it is allowed that two constraints are fulfilled simultaneously.) For example, a 3 may be adjacent on the loop to either a 2 (V or white Kropki dot), a 4 (white Kropki dot), a 6 (black Kropki dot) or a 7 (X).

3) Non-loop sums: Clues outside the grid indicate the sum of all non-loop digits in the respective row or column up to the first loop cell. (The digit in the loop cell is not included in the sum.) In other words: A clue indicates the sum of all seen non-loop cells where a loop cell blocks vision.

Very nice puzzle! Lots of fun loop building. I found it a bit easier than 3 stars (solved it in 11 minutes), but I did work quite a bit with XV and kropki in the past so I am experienced with those. Lovely stuff.

Thank you for your kind words, Niverio! It is great to hear that you enjoyed the puzzle. Concerning difficulty: It could also be me overestimating it slightly (although previous Omnipotent Line puzzles had 2 stars and I think this one is somewhat harder). I have already joked with people that in order to become more comfortable with solving loop puzzles I should set some more on my own. :)
Anyhow, I am glad that you had a fun solve.
Kind regards, sujoyku
