Dutch Flat Mates (Omnipotent Lines)

(Published on 24. July 2024, 11:30 by sujoyku)

I have had a lot of fun with the puzzles of the Dutch Flat Mates series. Therefore, I feel honoured to now contribute one of my own puzzles. This one combines the Dutch Flat Mates constraint with Omnipotent Lines which allows for some interesting interactions. For a detailed description of the ruleset see below.

The most recent previous DFM-puzzle has been Dutch Flat Mates (Battenburg and Average Arrows) by Flinty. There you also find a list of all puzzles of the series so far. If you are interested in further puzzles with Omnipotent Lines, I like to refer to my OmniLS series. The most recent puzzle there has been OmniLS #4: Mighty Triangle. I wish you happy solving!

- Normal sudoku rules apply, i.e. each row, column and 3x3 region has to contain the digits from 1 to 9 once each.

- Dutch Flat Mates: Each 5 in the grid either has a 1 directly above or a 9 directly below it. (It may have both, but it does not need both.)

- Omnipotent Lines: The orange lines are so-called Omnipotent Lines, i.e. each pair of adjacent digits on such a line must fulfill either an X, V, white or black Kropki dot clue. In other words, any pair of adjacent digits on a line must sum to 5 or 10, be consecutive or in a 1:2 ratio. (At least one of these constraints must be met, it is allowed that two are fulfilled simultaneously.)

Example: The digit 3 may be adjacent on a line to either a 2 (V or white Kropki dot), a 4 (white Kropki dot), a 6 (black Kropki dot) or a 7 (X).

Hint to Start

Some columns are largely covered by vertical Omnipotent Lines. What does that imply for the digits involved in the Dutch Flat Mates rule?

Thank you for this nice puzzle, dear sujoyku! :)
I had to restart the puzzle once, because I made a wrong conclusion right in the beginning. After I had recognized my mistake, the solving had a nice flow. :)

Thank you for your comment, Lenivaya_Joppa! I am glad it worked out for you and that your solve had an enjoyable flow.
Kind regards, sujoyku

53 minutes because I thought that 1 and 9 only need to be above or below 5(i.e. I thought 1 below 5 is OK), thus got stuck lol. Things began to flow smoothly once I clarified the DFM rules.

Thank you for your comment, NEWS! I hope the misunderstanding of the rules did not give you too much headache and you still enjoyed the puzzle.
Kind regards, sujoyku

Cool combination. Great break in. Great fun. Looking forward to solve more omni line puzzles.

Thank you for your comment, wuc! I am glad that you enjoyed the DFM + omnipotent lines combo.

Lovely new DFM. Omnipotent lines are new to me but I'll have to hunt them down.

**
Thank you for your comment, ChinStrap! I am glad that you liked the puzzle. As they are quite flexible, the Omnipotent Lines may need a bit of practice for getting used to them. If you are interested, feel free to try some puzzles of the OmniLS series.
Kind regards, sujoyku

Very nice and smooth! Best omnipotent line puzzle so far. To me the line type itself doesn't feel especially interesting for solving, but it can work beautifully in well chosen combinations, like this one. (Not that the previous puzzles were bad either.) Thanks for setting and sharing!

Thank you for your comment, sorryimLate! I am glad that you enjoyed this puzzle and had a smooth solve. In my OmniLS series, I will try to explore further combinations of Omnipotent Lines with other constraints.
Kind regards, sujoyku

Very nice. Flowed very smoothly without the hint. Incredible to see how many constraints can be paired with DFM.

**
Thank you for your comment, gdc! I am glad you enjoyed the puzzle and liked its flow. Up to now, it seems nobody used the hint. I thought I give it because I wanted the puzzle to be accessible for people seeing an Omnipotent Lines puzzle for the first time.
Kind regards, sujoyku

Thank you so much for contributing this lovely puzzle to the series. :) Joy by name, Joy by nature. <3

Thank you for those kind words, Flinty! It has been a pleasure setting this one. I think the DFM constraint can be combined well with all sorts of rulesets because it has some nice implications while still being quite flexible.
