The Clues, the Whole Clues, and Nothing but the Clues.

(Published on 23. July 2024, 12:34 by Abdul the Killer)

Standard Sudoku rules apply.

SHADING: In the completed grid, cells containing numbers exactly one greater than an immediate neighbour (diagonal or orthogonal) within their box are shaded (and otherwise unshaded).

YIN YANG: The shaded cells form a single orthogonally connected region, as do the unshaded cells. No 2x2 region is wholly shaded or unshaded.

ARROWS: Values in cells with arrows give the number of shaded cells in the indicated direction. All possible arrows are given.

You need to know (or figure out) some truths about the shading rule and how it interacts with the arrows and Ying Yang.
Once you do, this puzzle is so much fun! The interaction between the clues really work their magic!
Very well done! I love it.
---Thanks, as always, for your generous comment and solve.---ATK

I've been stuck for days, leaving it and trying it again.
After getting confidence with it finally I have found out the way, after that it was higly rewarding to solve.
Thank you again @ATK for setting and sharing it, your shading puzzles are mandatory in my favorite list.
---Yeah, the break-in can sneakily hide, glad you stuck with it. Thank you for your kind comments. ---ATK

I loved everything about this puzzle. The rules, the negative constraint, the fact that you had a Yin Yang puzzle with such little information given on the perimeter. Everything.
---Thank you for very generous comment.---ATK

When you say all possible arrows are given, that's only limited to orthogonal arrows and exclude possible diagonal arrows, right?
---Yes, you are right. I might seek to remove the ambiguity next time.

Thanks for the solve.

Beautiful puzzle! I got the break in relatively quickly but then still made mistakes and had to reset twice. Very straightforward and satisfying nonetheless

The combination of your special shading rule with YY again worked absolutely perfect. I really enjoyed the walk on the solving path. I give 3/5, but maybe I was lucky looking at the right spots… Thank you very much for setting and sharing this masterpiece.
---Thank you for the extremely generous comment. For what it's worth, I initialised the puzzle at 3-stars, and the solver-rating has teetered between 3- and 4-stars. ---ATK

This is much much harder than I expected! It is very interesting but really brutal!
---Perhaps you missed some clues? (see my comments in the hidden comment to kamkam below). Good that you still enjoyed it.---ATK

--- Well, I did find the trick written in your hidden comment after staring at void and abyss for >= 70 minutes, and the total time I spent was >=90 minutes. Considering I can sometimes finish other setters' 5* puzzles within 60 minutes, it is fair enough for me to rate it 5*. Nonetheless, I admit nowadays in this community, there are thousands if not millions of genius that may spot the trick instantly, then it could even be a 2* puzzle for them XD!

@japanoise_breakfast It is the same number in each direction. For example: if there is an arrow pointing up and right with a 2, then there are 2 shaded cells to the right and 2 shaded cells upwards (4 = 2+2 total)

For cells with multiple arrows, is it the total number across all directions, or the same number in all directions?
---What gdc says above is correct (thanks gdc). This is also the same ruleset as my puzzle Blue Moon which I believe you have already solved. ---ATK
