Shaking Hands (Stingy killer sudoku)

(Published on 17. July 2024, 14:28 by sujoyku)

After my puzzle Stingy Cages has been so well received, I have continued exploring this variant. The title “Shaking Hands” is motivated by the observation that, in larger groups of people, you might try to shake hands with everyone, but with no one more than once. The Stingy constraint means that any two killer cages have in common at most one digit. In that sense, digits are “shaking hands” if they are contained in a common killer cage.

I like to thank MattDdraig and all the other testers on the CTC discord for testing and giving useful feedback on the puzzle. I think this one is more challenging than “Stingy Cages” and could lie in the 3 stars difficulty range. As always, your comments are highly appreciated. I wish you joyful solving!

- Normal sudoku rules apply, i.e. each row, column and 3x3 region has to contain the digits from 1 to 9 once each.

- Killer cages: Digits in a cage must sum to the clue in the top left.

- Stingy Condition: Any two killer cages can have at most one digit in common. For example, if a cage contains the digits 1 and 2, no other cage may have both these digits.

Love these stingy killers. For some reason, they come easier than other types of variants. Thanks for sharing!

Shaking my own hands seems silly, but clapping them together after solving this puzzle seems appropriate.

That was very pretty, I think I liked it even more than the first one. Definitely a bit easier with a scrap of paper and a pen for me!

Very nice puzzle. But even after figuring out the cages, it took me quite an effort to solve. Very satisfying though.

Thank you for your comment, rameshsrivats! I am glad that you liked the puzzle and found the solve to be satisfying. I can very much relate with your statement about difficulty. I think this one is trickier than "Stingy Cages" both with regard to cages and the sudoku involved.
