Three By Three

(Published on 9. July 2024, 22:58 by MSDOS)

This puzzle was heavily inspired by SirMoose's "Twin 4s". I hope you enjoy!

Rules:

  • Place the digits from 1-9 in the grid so that they do not repeat in any row or column. Digits can (and will) repeat in each 3x3 box. Each box will use exactly 3 of the digits from 1-9.

  • Standard XV, kropki, and arrow rules apply:

  • Digits separated by a 'V' must sum to 5.
  • Digits separated by an 'X' must sum to 10.
  • Digits separated by a white dot are consecutive.
  • Digits separated by a black dot are in a 1:2 ratio.
  • Digits along an arrow line sum to the digit in the attached circle.

Solution code: Row 8 from left to right (9 digits).

As someone who regularly gets struggles on 1 star difficulty puzzles, I'm satisfied with this as a 1 star difficulty. A very satisfying puzzle to solve.

That was a truly enjoyable puzzle to solve! Thanks MSDOS!
I would not rate it 1 star out of five, but rather a 3 stars out of 5 for difficulty, because there's some trick you need to know (or catch), and that's not easy to understand if you've never faced such kind of rules of 3x3.

But once again, really grate puzzle!

MSDOS: Thanks so much for the comment GandalfLeRouge! I think that due to the non-standard sudoku logic, it's less approachable, but as you say, once you have a strategy for local 3x3 logic, it's quite quick.

Very nice kinda-sudoku puzzle. It's interesting how big of an impact even one number on the grid has.

Also, very useful to understand how the boxes even can fill up so if you've done these in the past 1* is very much valid. Doing it the first time, might be closer to 2*.

MSDOS: Thanks for the comment Snaques! I totally agree that it may not be 1-star approachable, but once you get the trick, it becomes very basic.

Thanks, this was one of the best puzzles I've ever solved. Totally 100% approval rate. Though I would have it more to 2 stars instead of one. It took me some time to get in the right mind set

MSDOS: Thank you so much for the comment! I agree, the geomerty part to get going is a little less 1-star, but the 'sudoku' logic is very trivial once you know what digits are in a box.

So much fun. Took a while to get into the right way of thinking, but once I had that, it was a breeze.
