(Published on 5. July 2024, 20:11 by The Bard)

XOV to Chicago

Extended sudoku rules apply, place the digits 0-9 in each row, column, and box; however one digit will not fit. This digit can vary and repeat and is to be determined by the solver.

XV: Digits separated by an X add to 10, those separated by a V add to 5. All X's and V's are given.

Kropki: Digits between white dot are consecutive.

shoot.. must learn to read, my mistake.. third playthrough same spot... rescanned the rules.. there it was (all of a sudden ;-)) ALL XVs are given.... hasn't been there before I swear (*cough*cough*)

frankly this one I don't like at all...
everything was a blast and coloring everything but the R5C4-5 domino and all of their siblings (couldn't find a way to make clear which one is which colorwise)
and at the end I think I came to the same three sahi1l was talking about (said domino and R9C5 with either R5C4 or R4C4 as an option)
And that's been it.. stuck for good.. negative constraint? I can't see an in the rules, luckily the first of two possible guesses solved the puzzle, but that was guessing and I hate it.

Just when you forget about the negative constraint, you get to the last three squares and boom! Now you need it. Lovely!

Glad you enjoyed it. Working through 0-9 challenges are a bit tricky since a lot of techniques are no longer an option. Thus a lot of clues and other types of constraints.

You did it again! I had taken about 4-5 days off for US Independence Day (long weekend) and solved it just now on a break. Pleased it took me just over 11 minutes. These ones really make sense to me and are a blast to solve. You are the best!!! Thanks again!

~~
I was wondering how long it would take you to find it. You normally find my puzzles very quickly, but I am glad you took some time off for yourself. I hope you enjoyed your long weekend. And as always it was my pleasure to create this for you and others.

Thanks for the correction! It's exactly what I was running into! 32:43 even with knowing where most of the numbers were supposed to be.

~~
Again, my apologies to you and thanks for your preseverance.
This is what happens when you dont have testers to help validate puzzles.

My appologies to those of you who have been frustrated by this puzzle. I have looked at this a dozen times and missed it every time, but there was a violation of the negative constraint. It is fixed now.

Hi, I managed to solve enough to get the solution code but I had a box empty, filled it in, and it solved, r3c3 and r3c4 form an X not fitting the negative constraint, did I do something wrong?

~~
No you didn't. I did. My appologies for missing that constraint.

Yeah, have done 0-9 puzzles before, was using colors as well, and wasn't trying to solve for the numbers. Kept coming up with r3c4 having all possibilities eliminated. Oh well, had fun trying at least!

~~
You did great! It was me who messed up on this one for that cell. It is fixed now.

I have hit a contradiction about 5 different times... I must be making the same mistake but am unsure where.

~~
I am sorry to learn you are struggling so much.
The only suggestion I have to offer is to maybe start with some of the other 0-9 challenges that are a bit easier to get more use to them because this one is a bit more complicated if you are not familiar with them. I have made several others if you wanted to give them a try.

Further edit:
You are right I made a creation mistake missing the X between 2 cells.
My apologies.

Fairly simple with colors: I use light yellow/green for one of the regular Vs (not separating them yet), light purple/blue for the other, and light red/orange for the 05s (the first couple of 05s are fairly simple to work out where they are at the start).
Then I add the darker shades of yellow/green/purple/blue where necessary to complete the X's.
Then I remove a green from one cell of a yellow/green V domino (and the yellow from the other), and do the same for a purple/blue domino, which then starts to allow me to start ambiguating other Vs and X's.
At that point it becomes fairly easy! I'd honestly say this is a 1-star, even with the 0 rule (I can usually only complete 1-star puzzles, and only gave this currently 2-star one a go because it was obviously a colouring puzzle...and completed it in less than 15mins!)

~~
WOW!! 15 Min!
That is really good, as the creator I would struggle to get it done that fast.
I think you may win the trophey for this puzzle!! :)

Worked on it three hours before giving up. Always found a conflict at r3c3 and r3c4. Not sure where I kept erring.

~~
This one can be tricky especially if you haven't done several 0-9 ones before.
If you every want to try again, I might suggest using letters to assign cells and solve by letter before trying to do the math. It is not the fastest way to solve but it does get the job done.

Solved very nicely, however at the end I was down to four cells, each with two possibilities, and it seemed that there were multiple combinations that solved the puzzle. Perhaps I’m missing something though! EDIT: I missed the negative constraint with the XV rule. :)

~~
That it worked for you and that you were able to identify the resolve.

Very cool piece. Good luck to those who hate pencil notations lol

~~
You are not wrong, and I am glad you liked it. The 0-9 challenges require a lot of elimination since several other techniques don't work the same.
