The Lost Woods (BotW tribute)
(Published on 3. July 2024, 07:47 by MSDOS)
This puzzle is inspired by the Lost Woods in the Legend of Zelda series, specifically Breath of the Wild / Tears of the Kingdom. Even if you know where your destination is, you must walk along the right path or be forever lost!
This is technically the second version that I made, but I'm much happier with this result where I was able to make the ruleset a bit more concise, cohesive, and thematic.
It is not for the faint of heart to venture into the Lost Woods. Tread carefully, and pay attention to your surroundings, there may be clues that guide your way!
Rules:
- Normal sudoku rules apply.
- The grid is partially covered in fog. Correctly placed digits will clear the fog around that cell. No guessing is required.
- Shade a 1-cell wide non-branching orthogonal path through the grid that does not touch itself, even diagonally, such that no 2x2 area is entirely unshaded. The starting point of the path is the circle in the bottom left, and the end of the path is the circle in the top right.
- Bottomless Bogs:
Cells with a large brown diamond are NOT on the path, and its digit indicates the number of path cells surrounding it. (or a King's move from it)
- Rupees: (small coloured diamonds)
- Digits separated by a GREEN rupee have a difference of 1. (aka white kropki)
- Digits separated by a BLUE rupee have a difference of 5.
- A RED rupee indicates the leftmost cell in the topmost row of a draw-your-own killer cage. Each cage sums to 20 and the digit in this cell indicates the number of cells that are a part of the cage. Digits in a cage cannot repeat, and cages cannot overlap with other cages. (for clarity, a killer cage can contain cells that are further left than the red rupee cell as long as they are in lower rows)

Very clever puzzle. I loved every idea. Such a smooth and challenging puzzle. One idea in the middle was almost making me give up. Huge fun. Very rewarding. Thx for sharing.

Those draw your own cages have a lot of possibilities to eliminate! Almost pushed this up to a five star rating for me, but once you get past a few of them they're not too bad. Very smart puzzle!

MSDOS: Thanks for the comment! They were indeed the tougher parts of the puzzle.

Loved it. there was always a clue available. You just had to ask the right questions.
