The Wrogn Core

(Published on 1. July 2024, 16:54 by wuc)

I tried to create an approachable wrogn puzzle. Have fun and leave a comment.

Standard sudoku rules apply: The digits 1 through 9 appear in every row, column, and box.

Box 5 (the 3x3 box in the center) is fully infected by false information. All clues in box 5 are wrong (meaning not entirely correct). All clues outside box 5 are correct.

For Arrows, XV-Dominoes, the Killer Cage, Thermometers and the magenta renban line, common rules apply:

Arrows: Digits along an arrow must sum to the number indicated in the circle from which the arrow emerges. Digits may repeat along arrows if allowed by other rules.
XV-Dominos: Cells separated by an X must sum to 10. Cells separated by a V must sum to 5. Not all Xs and Vs are necessarily given (no negative constraint).
Killer-Cages: Digits in cages cannot repeat and must sum to the value shown in the upper left corner of the cage.
Thermometers: Digits on Thermos are strictly increasing from bulb to tip.
Renban line: Usually shown as purple lines, digits along a Renban line must form a set of non-repeating consecutive digits in any order.

Solution code: Row 9 left to right.

That took me way longer than it should have. I found the sudoku challenging; sure enough, there was always a clue I had been completely ignoring. A very fair puzzle that solves well if you pay attention to each clue!

I started with the arrows and XVs,and then introduced numbers in box 5 quickly.
Very nice problem!

Thank you! I don't usually like wrogn puzzles, but this was fun.

Wrogn puzzles usually intimidate me, as I'm less-than confident in my sudoku skills. (*Maybe* a 2-star puzzle good...)
Thank you for this fun, approachable puzzle!

very lovely! i appreachiate(?) how you make the wrogn constraint easy and approachable

@asp1310: I fully agree. The "not entirely correct" is how the wrogn ruling is usually described.

How can an X or V clue be "not entirely correct"? That cannot be partially correct in the first place; either it adds up to 10 or 5 or it doesn't!

Same goes for the cage clue - either it adds up to 6 or it doesn't. And same for the 2-cell thermos - either they are in the correct order or they are not.

In fact the only clue which can be partially incorrect or "not entirely correct" is the renban.

I had a lovely time with this puzzle! I really enjoy how smoothly the wrogn clues interact with each other.

@Damax: Yes all clues are wrong. Every clue itself is not intirely correct, e.g. there can be a 3457 renban. Part is consecutive. But the clue is not entirely correct. Or a thermo can be 132. Correct for the first two digits but not entirely correct.

Super fun, I love the "wrongs".

I'm sorry, could you clarify what the "meaning not entirely correct" parentheses mean? Some clues are correct and some are not? They're all wrong?

Edit: Thanks for the clarification! Nice puzzle, enjoyed the constraints
