OmniLS #1: Anything works

(Published on 1. July 2024, 11:00 by sujoyku)

With this puzzle I like to start a little puzzle series named OmniLS (Omnipotent Line Series). I have thought of a new line type that I call “Omnipotent Line”. This line is a combination of the XV and Kropki variants, that is, each pair of adjacent digits along the line has to fulfil an X, a V, a white or a black Kropki dot, but one does not know in which places which constraint is met. (In that regard, it is partially similar to puzzles with ambiguous Kropki dots.) My goal is to publish a new puzzle in this variant every week (maybe for the next 5?). Please feel free to write in the comments how you like it and which combinations with other variants you would like to see. Many thanks go to Flinty, meggen033 and CaptZebraCakes for testing the first puzzle. It is called “Anything works” and combines the Omnipotent Line rule with killer cages. Estimated difficulty is 2.5 to 3 stars. I wish you happy solving!

- Normal sudoku rules apply, i.e. each row, column and 3x3 region has to contain the digits from 1 to 9 once each.

- Killer cages: Digits in a cage sum to the clue in the top left.

- Omnipotent Line: The orange line is a so-called Omnipotent Line, i.e. each pair of adjacent digits on the line must fulfill either an X, V, white or black Kropki dot clue. In other words, any pair of adjacent digits on the line must sum to 5 or 10, be consecutive or in a 1:2 ratio. (At least one of these constraints must be met, it is allowed that two are fulfilled simultaneously.)

Example: The digit 3 may be adjacent on the line to either a 2 (V or white Kropki dot), a 4 (white Kropki dot), a 6 (black Kropki dot) or a 7 (X).

Fantastic puzzle. I had to restart twice as i kept missing one of the possible constraints, you really have to concentrate. I would recommend this puzzle to anyone looking for something different!

Thank you for your comment, ostio456! I am glad that you liked the puzzle. We are so used to XV and Kropki, but keeping all options in mind at once definitely is a challenge. If you enjoyed this constraint, I can highly recommend the puzzle "Divinity through the fog" (OmniLS #2) by meggen033.

Beautiful concept.
I honestly think that it's not too difficult. Probably a 1.5 star rating for me. Once you understand how the line works it's pretty straight forward. Nice breakin. The breakin is perhaps the most difficult part of the puzzle.

**
Thank you for your comment, Rawcoder! I am glad that you liked the concept. Also thanks for sharing your thoughts on the puzzle's difficulty. As the ruleset is new and I thought it might be challenge to get used to this line type, I may have overestimated the difficulty a little. I often struggle with estimating the difficulty of my own puzzles and the testing suggested it should be 2 stars or above. In the end, the solvers have to decide and I am completely fine with whatever difficulty rating it gets assigned.

Keep the series going!

IDK why this has only an 87% rating...I loved it!! Thanks a lot. Great idea and excellent execution!

**
Thank you for your kind comment, PinkNickels! I am really glad that you enjoyed the puzzle. To be honest, I had hoped for a better rating at this point. But it is what it is. :)
I think enough people like the concept that I can risk releasing more of this variant next week.
