Piercing the Bubbles

(Published on 1. July 2024, 11:23 by FullDeck-Missing)

NOTE: The Molecules constraint used in this puzzle was given as the Round 2 constraint in a Skunkworks Speed-Setting Contest in summer of 2024. We really liked the constraint and set this puzzle afterwards, not as part of the contest. This puzzle, particularly given the novelty of the constraint which we did not create, is a bit more difficult than our usual fare.

Normal sudoku rules: Every row, column, and box must contain a complete set of the digits 1-9.

Arrows: Digits along the shaft of an arrow sum to the value shown in the attached circle.

MOLECULES: Cells containing digits from 1-5 are always electrons. Cell containing digits from 6-9 may also be electrons but are not required to be electrons. The digits in electron cells on each atom (pink circle) sum to 8.

You can find a complete list of our puzzles on LMD here. Please also visit us at Missing Deck Puzzles, where we post a new puzzle each day.

Solution code: Column 9, top to bottom, 9 digits no spaces.

Took me a while to find the break in. There are a lot of moving parts. Very interesting constraint.

Interesting constraint - you could also think if it as pirate themed with "pieces of eight" :)
