RAT RUN 4: Borderline

(Published on 26. June 2024, 01:59 by marty_sears)

Rules:
  • Normal sudoku rules apply: place the digits 1-9 once each in every row, column, and 3x3 box (marked with dotted lines.)
  • AIM OF EXPERIMENT: Finkz the rat must reach the cupcake by finding a path through the maze (the path will be a snaking line that passes through the centres of cells, without visiting any cell more than once, crossing itself or passing through any thick maze walls.) Diagonal moves are not possible in this maze.
  • BLACKCURRANTS: Cells connected by a blackcurrant have a 1:2 ratio (one is double the other.) Not all possible blackcurrants have been given.
  • ONE-WAY DOORS: Finkz may only pass directly through a purple arrow if moving in the direction the arrow is pointing. An arrow always points to the smaller of the two digits it sits between.
  • TEST CONSTRAINT: In this experiment, the correct path will be a valid Region Sum line - ie: box borders (dotted lines) will divide the path into segments which each have the same sum.

Solution code: Digits on the path in row 5 (from left to right)

Something I love about this series is that, despite one chunk of the rules remaining constant, you keep making each puzzle play out significantly differently from each other.

One of the finest puzzles I've ever had the privilege to solve.

This puzzle series reminds me of a short story I read in school: Barney, by Will Stanton.

It's only a matter of time before it's the rat designing the puzzles...

Felt 2.5 star to me. Great puzzle like the others. Refreshing constraint for the maze. Lots of fun to solve thx.

I’ve been really adoring these fun and thematic maze puzzles, I can’t wait to see where Finkz goes next!! Thanks for the puzzles!!
Side note: I used to puppeteer a giant rat puppet (named Whiskers/Whiskey) in a haunted maze and this brings back very fond memories <3

I'd really like a signed photo of Finkz. It's for my son Michel. Thank you so much.

It's too hard, so this rat must rant. To run, to turn, is smooth and easy, but I'm still thinking about those cURRANTs I didn't get to eat. You naughty scientist! Thanks for the cupcake though, I will forgive you.

Thank you for this fantastic puzzle, marty sears! Your maze sudokus never cease to amaze (no pun intended xD). I think this one was my favourite so far. In the first phase, I really needed to work hard to find my segments of the path. But once it was filled it, everything fell into place in one smooth flow. Thank you for this series of great puzzles!
