Whispering Saddle

(Published on 16. June 2024, 12:45 by Schma)

As promised, I combined the Saddle rule with German whisper lines (and added some Quadruple clues on top). Have a look at my "Whispering Saddle" Sudoku.

As always, any comments are highly appreciated. :)

Play on SudokuPad

The rules are as follows:

  • Sudoku: Normal Sudoku rules apply.
  • Saddle: The brown circle is a saddle point and is always connected to 4 brown lines representing a saddle. Moving away from a circle, digits on a line have to either strictly increase or decrease in relation to the number in the circle. Each circle has two opposite lines with increasing property and two opposite lines with decreasing property.
  • German Whisper: Adjacent digits along a green German Whisper line must differ by at least 5.
  • Quadruple: A digit in a white circle must appear in the four surrounding cells.
  • There are no negative constraints.

While creating the puzzle, it started to look like a sword, turned into a christmas tree and now (to me) it looks like some kind of rocket or spaceship. Not really intended but I like the look of it :D

This one is supposed to be easy and I would rate it at 1/5. It is the easiest out of the three saddle rule puzzles that I created. If you have trouble understanding the ruleset, check out my first puzzle (Sandwich on a Saddle) where I try to explain the ruleset a bit better. I want to come up with more of these in the future and I would love to see some other setter(s) finding joy with the ruleset :)

Solution code: All digits from column 5 (top to bottom).

Nice and easy introduction to the saddle rule. I was able to place two digits immediately and it went very smoothly from there. Would be great to see more of this ruleset.

I really found this quite tricky even after I understood the saddle ruleset. Got a lot of the digits on the saddle lines pretty early on but definitely rating it harder than 1 star! Probably just me but had to think about this one for a while...

@wuc Same here, that naked single took a while.

Thanks for including the solution. It helped me understand the new (for me) rule set after making a couple of mistakes. Fun puzzle!

Cool concept with the saddle. A struggled on a naked single you need in the middle. Found it more 1.5 starish. Great fun thx.

It was really interesting for me the use of the saddle point. Thanks for the puzzle

I think I'm finally getting the hang of the saddle ruleset, hurray! I really enjoyed this puzzle, and it was definitely the easiest so far. Keep them coming!
