Te Ka (Nurikabe Chaos Construction)

(Published on 16. June 2024, 03:39 by MaizeGator)

Rules

  • Normal Sudoku Chaos Construction rules apply: Place the digits from 1-9 into every row, column, and region (groups of 9 connected cells), which the solver must locate. No two regions may have the same shape, including reflections and rotations.

  • Normal nurikabe rules apply: Shade some cells blue (representing water), such that all water cells are orthogonally connected, but water may not fully cover a 2x2 area. Shade the remaining cells green, which represent islands.

  • Each Chaos Construction Region contains at most one Nurikabe Island, while each Nurikabe Island must be contained within a single Chaos Construction Region. No two Nurikabe Islands may have the same number of cells.

  • If a cell with an arrow is WATER, the digit indicates the distance to the nearest island cell in the direction of the arrow.

  • Else if a cell with an arrow is ISLAND, the digit indicates the number of cells in the island and the direction of the arrow is irrelevant. An island does not necessarily need to have such an arrow.

For my second puzzle, I wanted to pay homage to a few of my favorite puzzles, including Agent's "Polynesia" and Christounet's "Sudokabe". However, those were both Deconstructions, and being a new setter, thought it would be better to try a Chaos Construction first.

For region-building clues, I've always loved direction-pointing arrows. These arrows have been thoroughly explored by various setters, but the ambiguity of the arrows adds an extra twist. This aspect was inspired by KNT's recent "Red Team, Blue Team".

I must acknowledge the above-and-beyond coaching from three setters that I've admired for a while. Agent, Christounet, and Niverio played a massive role in getting this puzzle to its final state and were outrageously generous with their time and expertise over the past few days in test-solving and offering feedback and suggestions.

We are still watching a lot of Moana in my household. The final battle scene is quite chaotic, so it made sense to name my Nurikabe Chaos Construction after the lava goddess-turned-demon "Te Ka" from the movie.

Solution code: Locate the Chaos Construction Region that contains Row 3, Column 4. Input the number of Nurikabe Island cells in that region, then list the digits of that region (both land and water) from left-to-right and top-to-bottom. (10 digits total)

Excellent puzzle! I really enjoyed the different logic necessary at different "phases" of the solve!

"No region should have the same shape" is not part of "normal CC rules" - placing that sentence under that headline makes it likely for solvers to miss this additional constraint.

BEAUTIFUL puzzle! Several moments of "There's no way to tell anything about this. Except that. And that. And..." and suddenly it's solved.

What an INCREDIBLE puzzle this is!!!

I was convinced the whole way through that I couldn't possibly be getting through it without having got something wrong, so I was delighted when I saw "The solution is correct." xD

Feels like the real puzzle started only when the islands were found. Very nice. thanks.
