Dad Day

(Published on 14. June 2024, 13:28 by yanggang)

Hi all, I have been trying to get my father into doing sudoku variants. He's pretty new but we love doing easy puzzles together. Inspired by Kennet's Dad's Mom Day puzzle, I created this puzzle for my dad for Father's Day.

Normal sudoku rules apply.

Lines:

  • Blue region-sum line: Box borders divide the line into regions, each of which sum to the same value.
  • Green German whispers line: Adjacent digits on the line differ by at least 5.
  • Purple renban line: Digits on the line form a set of consecutive digits (not necessarily in order).
  • Red Chinese whispers line: Adjacent digits on the line differ by at most 2.
  • Orange Dutch whispers line: Adjacent digits on the line differ by at least 4.
  • Yellow nabner line: Any two digits on the line differ by at least two.

XY Sums:

  • A pair of digits separated by an X must sum to 10.
  • A pair of digits separated by an Y must sum to 15.
  • Not all X's or Y's are necessarily given.

Very fun puzzle, and trickier than expected. Happy Father's Day!

You explained the yellow line in three different ways. All of those call it a Nabner Line so I assume it's a standard Nabner Line but only one of your explanations (the one that reads "any two digits on the line differ by at least two") actually forces all of the rules for a Nabner Line

Reply: Good point, thanks. Fixed it.

I'm seeing multiple solutions, I think you need to add that digits can't repeat on the nabner line?

Reply: That's a good point. Clarified the rules to remove this possibility; sorry.

Cool puzzle, I have two caveats about it though:
1) Please pick a lighter blue color for the region sum line, the color used makes it impossible to check pencilmarks on it.
2) I definitely would consider puzzle a 3 star at least, and it is not super beginner friendly for someone new like your dad. Especially the ending uses a few hard to spot tricks which will likely not be seen by a new solver. It is a cool challenge for experienced people though :)
