Squares In The Fog

(Published on 12. June 2024, 15:28 by RockyRoer)

Here's my first fog puzzle -- it's got a little bit of arithmetic, and discovery, and of course, sudoku. Have fun!

The Rules:

  1. Normal [Fog] sudoku rules apply - fill every row, column, and 3x3 region with the digits 1 to 9 once each. Placing correct digits will remove fog from surrounding cells to reveal more clues.
  2. [Squares] - Somewhere in the fog are 9 cells marked with squares - one in every row, column and 3x3 box. These squares must contain the digits 1-9 once each. Additionally, the sum of ALL the digits in the cells up to and including the cells containing squares, (top to bottom, left to right, as one might read) must always sum to a square number.
    • For example, if R4C2 contains a square, then the sum of the digits in row 1, row 2, row 3, R4C1, and R4C2 must be a square number (in this case, specifically 144).
    • The square numbers are 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36; 49, 64, 81; 100, 121; 144, 169; 196, 225; 256; 289, 324; 361, 400

The Puzzle:

Try it on Sven's Sudoku Pad

Solution code: The column containing the square containing the 4 from top to bottom.

Holy cow what an absolutely awesome puzzle… I certainly had to bust out my notebook and pencil, but once I started going the rest worked out so well. Flipping between the notepad and the puzzle as things revealed in the fog was super enjoyable. Loved it!

Beautiful break in. It really surprised me how constraining square numbers can be. Excellent, creative use of fog of war! :)

Thanks for the solve video! I couldn't hear anything - but I'm not sure i would have understood anything if i could. But as I watched I knew exactly what you were saying :-) Nice job!

Awesome. If you overcome the hurdle of really open a speadsheet for some notes it is not that difficult. But for me as a math guy a brilliant constraint. Thx.

Great idea, beautifully executed, thanks.

Once I understood the rules (albeit by "cheating" to see what showed up under the fog), I was able to back up, pretend I hadn't seen anything, and solve it - and it was quite fun! I won't be surprised if this gets a CTC solve - clever idea, well executed.

I really enjoyed all the arithmetic in this!! I love breaking out a pencil, paper and my calculator to do some good ol’ math :) Thanks for the puzzle!

I kept staring at it for a long time before realizing that some empty cells were given that dont have squares. I had not taken those into account.
