Careless Zipper

(Published on 11. June 2024, 03:13 by heliopolix )

Inspired by Marty Sears's broken zipper puzzle, these zippers have a different kind of problem. Zipping your jacket in a hurry sometimes creates a lopsided zip, the mismatched end dangling in the breeze.

Rules:

  • Sudoku: Place the digits 1-9 once each in every row, column, and 3x3 box.
  • Zipper Lines: Digits an equal distance from the center of a lavender line sum to the same total. For odd-length lines, the total is the digit placed in the line's center. Digits may repeat on a line, if allowed by other rules.
  • Mismatched Ends: All zipper lines have mismatched ends. For each line, one of the cells on either end of the line is not actually on the zipper. The solver must determine which cell is not on the zipper for each line. Zipper logic must use the shortened line length, not the drawn line length.
  • Kropki & Anti-Kropki Pairs: Digits separated by a white dot are consecutive. Digits separated by a white dash are not consecutive. Not all dots or dashes are necessarily given.

Changed solution code to be simpler, for clarity.

Old code description: In ascending numerical order, the digits in cells left off the mismatched end of each zipper.

Really loved the concept when I first saw it, and the puzzle logic didn't disappoint. Really fun new twist on zippers, and in a way that is intuitive to anyone who has ever had a zip misalignment nightmare with their jacket. The rectangles added a cool element, I can see them being used in other puzzles. A good difficulty level for me as well :)

You almost had me thinking this was easy for a bit, then the puzzle really gets going in the middle. Some really neat wing-like logic in here
