Quad-tenburg

(Published on 9. June 2024, 11:25 by sujoyku)

This is my first quadruple sudoku. A strong source of inspiration was the great puzzle “Meeting the quota” by Allagem. My puzzle combines the quadruple with the Battenburg constraint. The difficulty is estimated at 1.5 stars. I like to thank CaptZebraCakes for testing the puzzle. Also I want to thank jubale is and superrabbit for their advice on the CTC discord how to set up quads in penpa. As always, your comments are much appreciated. I wish you happy solving!

- Normal sudoku rules apply, i.e. each row, column and 3x3 region has to contain the digits from 1 to 9 once each.

- Quadruple: A digit in a circle must appear in one of the four surrounding cells.

- Battenburg: Whenever 2 odd and 2 even digits form a 2x2 checkerboard pattern (e.g. R1C1 and R2C2 even, R1C2 and R2C1 odd), a Battenburg marking is given. If there is no such marking, the above pattern is not allowed.

Clarification: Also quadruples may only form an odd/even-checkerboard if there is an underlying Battenburg marking.

I've not played many puzzles with the battenburg ruleset, and while I found this fun I also found it very difficult. Just over 50 minutes, not including a long break. Enjoyed it very much though! Neat mix of rules and, when I finally found it, cool logic

Thank you for your comment, m_and_m_toastie! I am glad that you enjoyed the puzzle. You are right, the Battenburg constraint is not that common at the moment. If you like it, you might check out some of my other puzzles in this variant. I also highly recommend "Bad Thermburg" by Qodec and "Mountain Snow" by CaptZebraCakes.

Lovely puzzle. I found it quite tricky (but I’m by no means a pro), but not frustrating. Made it all the more rewarding to finally get it.

I wouldn't say this is 1.5 stars at all. To me it felt like a hard 2 or even a soft 3.

**
Thank you for your comment, emsou! Maybe I erred a little on the easier side. Although in my defense, I like to argue that the difficulty depends on the familiarity with the Battenburg constraint. :)
But be that as it may, thank you for sharing your opinion.

added a clarification to the rules in reaction to a question by asp1310, no changes to the contents of the puzzle

Can quadruples be battenburgs?

**
Quadruples only may be Battenburgs if they also have an underlying Battenburg symbol. Maybe I should have emphasized that in the wording of the rules. Thank you for posing this question and thereby clarifying the matter, asp1310!
