Spirality

(Published on 6. June 2024, 08:30 by Nordy)

I had originally planned to publish a "99" themed puzzle to commemorate this publishing milestone, but that puzzle has turned into a bit of a monster. I still plan to publish it, but I ultimately decided to not let that puzzle hold my creativity hostage. So, I hope you enjoy some weird geometry instead! Difficulty estimated at 3.5 stars.

Rules:

Normal Sudoku rules apply.

Connect the centers of orthogonally- and/or diagonally-adjacent cells to form a single, continuous, non-intersecting, non-branching line in the shape of a spiral. As the line moves, it may only continue straight or turn to form 135° angles (no 45° or 90° turns). Turns must be either all clockwise or all counterclockwise. Additionally:

  • The spiral must visit all given digits
  • The spiral acts as a Region Sum Line—box borders divide the spiral into segments with equal sums

Here is an example of a spiral:

Solve Online:

Solution code: Digits on the spiral in Row 3 (left to right) then digits on the spiral in Row 6 (left to right)

Despite a clear logical path forward, the unusualness of the ruleset had me double-backing and redoing the puzzle many times.

Only puzzle I've restarted 5 times (or more) but with a reasonable solve time 90 min total.

Some interesting geometry indeed! Like some other solvers, it took me a bit to fully grasp the consequences of the rule set, but fortunately my sanity didn't spiral out of control while solving :)

Very nice and great fun!

Really smooth - took a bit of getting used to the rule, but some cool logic

A fantastic concept executed extremely well. Had to be careful about false assumptions but found it super smooth once I got the hang of it. Definitely deserves more solves!

Very nice puzzle! I wonder why this has so few solves... Maybe the given digits don't look attractive enough - or maybe it's because of the anti-cheat solution code :)
