I Heard You Like Cages

(Published on 4. June 2024, 20:56 by vitaminz)

This puzzle is inspired by a puzzle by ViKingPrime that was later revised to a totally different ruleset, so a big thanks to him for this and for testing. Thanks also to Marty Sears for ideas and also manpower on the grid aesthetics - it would be much less beautiful without him. Thanks also to many testers in the CtC discord, particularly SamuPiano. And finally, thank you to Lake for an unspecified idea I've shamelessly stolen that he might be able to identify in the puzzle.

RULES:

Normal Sudoku Rules Apply

Each cage in the grid is either a killer cage or a look-and-say cage (or both), with each to be determined by the solver. Cage colors have no logical content.

Killer Cages: Digits must not repeat within a cage and must sum to the number in the top-left corner.
Look-and-Say Cages: The number in the top left corner says how many of a digit are in that cage. The ones place indicates the digit and the tens place indicates exactly how many times that digit appears. Digits may repeat in look-and-say cages if allowed by this and other rules. Example: If a look-and-say cage has the clue "14" then there is exactly one 4 in the cage.

Absolutely loved it! Very fun break in. Great puzzle!

This was brilliant! The 'unspecified idea from Lake' was really useful at helping me solve this. Apart from one deduction towards the end which I would class as a 4-5 star deduction, the rest of it did sit very comfortably in the 3 star department and flowed beautifully.

One particular part in box 1 I found very satisfying indeed.

Great work mate, definitely worthy of a feature on CTC!

The difficulty can be set lower than 3 stars in my opinion, but it was a very fun puzzle, and nice idea!

Really fun puzzle! This one was a joy to test :)

What an absolute privilege this was to test. I can't take any credit for this idea (besides toying with some Look-and-Say logic), this is a Justin Vitanza original and what an idea it is; such a fresh and innovative take on overlapping cages. The break-in is smart, the logic is fair and it flows wonderfully; every time you see the next step you get this little giddy sense of joy. Well done.
