The calm before the storm (Diagonal killer sudoku)

(Published on 22. May 2024, 20:51 by sujoyku)

This puzzle is a classic killer sudoku with diagonal constraint. I was torn a little with estimating its difficulty level. The first phase to me felt like 3 stars while the puzzle becomes easier after that. Overall, it could be around 2.5 stars. Please feel free to share in the comments what you think and how you liked the puzzle. I wish you happy solving!

- Normal sudoku rules apply, i.e. each row, column and 3x3 region has to contain the digits from 1 to 9 once each.

- Diagonal: On the main diagonals digits do not repeat.

- Killer cages: Digits in a cage sum to the clue in the top left.

Here you can solve the puzzle online:

Solution code: Row 7 from left to right (9 digits in total)

Thanks a lot for your hidden comment, I didn't thought about checking the combinations in the box you mention in your comment, it feels to me this is a basic deduction in killer sudoku, but I'm relatively new to this type of puzzle.
This will improve my skills for sure.
Thanks a lot for taking time to explain your logic, it will help me for future killer sudokus.
That's very nice of you.

You are much welcome, frosto. I wish you happy solving in your next (killer) puzzles!

I struggled a bit with the logic, I had to use a killer calculator, as I'm not familiar with the combinations, and I had to use some deadly pattern try and error in the middle of the solve.
I think I missed some deductions.
But in the end it was a fun one, even if I took 2 hours for it, I think I'm not a clever person :)

Thank you for your comment, frosto, and congratulations on the solve! In my opinion, there is no shame whatsoever in using the killer calculator. The more killer puzzles you solve, the more you will get used to which cage totals have which number of options. That said, I am afraid the calculator might not be extremely useful for this one. But to avoid spoilers, I wont go into any more detail, but explain my thoughts in a hidden comment.
I am glad you had a fun solve.

Wow! That was a great puzzle! So much elegance from start to finish. I loved the way you just chip away at the deductions without really feeling like it's moving anywhere and them bam! It all comes together. Very well done! Cheers and God Bless!

Thank you for your kind words, meggen033! It is great to hear that you had this impression while solving. It was actually my inspiration for the title: You start out finding bits of logic and suddenly everything is starting to roll. As I am a big fan of your puzzles (and those of your sons^^), your appreciating feedback means a lot to me.

Quite liked the break in and even that was 2* imho. So all in all 2* seems to be spot on.

I think that you can immediately see what to look for and even though the deduction for the break in called for some thinking, the fact that you know where to look for makes the puzzle 2*. Usually when going 3* and beyond, nothing is obvious when you open the puzzle.

Thank you sujoyku for a nice puzzle!

You are much welcome, Snaques, thank you for giving your reasoning with regard to the difficulty rating! I am glad that you enjoyed the puzzle.

Way more difficult than 1*. 2* seems abut accurate from my experience and the other comments here.

**
Thank you for the comment, Onkel_Dagobert! I agree with your take on difficulty and have to admit that I was a little surprised when the puzzle for some period had a one star difficulty rating. That being said, I often find it tricky to judge the difficulty of my own puzzles.

Very nice and around 1.5 stars difficulty for me. Thank you.

**
You are much welcome, GeorgeTheToad2, thank you for commenting! I am glad that you liked the puzzle. As mentioned, to me it felt harder than 2 stars but of course the estimation always is subjective and depends on your experience as a solver. Thank you for sharing your perspective.

Very nice puzzle, not too difficult although I did get stuck for a bit not noticing the pair in box 2, once I noticed the rest of the solve was very smooth. I agree with 2 stars, maybe harder for those that don't know the secret ;) Thank you

You are much welcome, jordanp301, thank you for your comment! I am glad that you liked the puzzle. The general opinion seems to settle on 2 stars which is perfectly fine by me.

I think 2* is a fair rating, but 2.5* is certainly reasonable. Regardless, thanks for sharing! Fun one.
