The Heat Is On

(Published on 22. May 2024, 09:02 by Phurba)

Rules:

  • Normal Sudoku rules apply. Place the digits 1 through 9 in each empty cell. Digits must not repeat within the same row, column, or box.
  • Anti-Entropy: No pair of orthogonally adjacent cells can contain digits from the same entropic set. The entropic sets are low (1, 2, 3), middle (4, 5, 6) and high (7, 8, 9).
  • Ultra-fast Thermometers: Along thermometers, digits increase by at least 3 at a time, starting from the bulb end.

Enjoy!

I rated this 2/5 difficulty.

Very approachable puzzle, and a very nice way of disambiguating values with the thermos.

I started solving by coloring entropy, then labeling each cells by values a-i. It was very nice to be able to fully color the entire puzzle before fully labeling each cell, all before having to disambiguate values. Very satisfying payoff to be able to mark all digits simultaneously. Sometimes puzzles require partial disambiguation before further coloring/labeling - but this puzzle doesn't and is very satisfying to solve.

----------

Coloring the entropy had some trickier logic, but I think it was 2/5 difficulty. Labeling values/digits, the logic is probably 1/5 difficulty. Disambiguating the values with the thermos is probably 2/5 difficulty.
Based on these, and the time it took me to solve, I think 2/5 was the difficulty (for me, of course). Typically 3/5 difficulty takes me 30-75 mins (for 9x9 sudoku basic variants, not including path/yinyang/deconstruction/etc puzzles), and this took me only around 20 mins to solve.

Overall very nice puzzle with satisfying payoff. I think 3/5 difficulty is too high, but the slightly easier difficulty definitely doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the solve.

Great Puzzle. 2* for me (~30 minutes to solve). Love the logical flow for such a minimal grid.
